I told my son when he went through this phase that if he kept teeling lies nobody would believe what he says and if something like a fire were to happen and he was the only one who knew. when he told someone that there was a fire they would think he was not truthfull and not call the firemen to come put it out. I had to tell him things of that nature for about a month before i stopped and then I started not believing him about everything. He would say just about anything to me and i would just start questioning his every word on purpose. He finaly relized i was not going to stop until he stopped telling lies. it took some time but it worked. and personaly I hated soap in the mouth when I was little and will not do that to my son.

YOU HAVE GOT TO BE KIDDING ME! A three year old DO NOT know the difference between lying and telling the truth. That is something that you have made up in your own mind. What is it that you are asking that you think a 3 year old is lying about? There is no right or wrong-there is only what you have formed an opinion on.

I have 2 kids and I haven't had this problem yet...but my sister did. She would tell her daughter to stick out her tongue so my sister could see if she was lying. My sister would tell my niece that her tongue was green...and would inform my niece that's how she knew she was lying. Then my sister would say..."Are you sure that's how it happened..??" Or whatever she was trying to find out...and give her a chance to admit to lying...then she would tell her if she didn't stop lying, her tongue would stay green and yucky..and that scared my niece, so she would tell the truth.

my son is also 3 yrs old, there has been times when i've caught him lying. kids are clever. make sure he understands what lying is. tell him reasons y lying is bad and make sure to punish him for doing it. (nothing too harsh) he needs to understand that it has consequences.

Punish him (time-out) when he lies. Make sure that you explain the difference between truth and a lie. For example, point to a color on a toy, say red for instance. and then say that color is purple, then ask him, is that the truth or a lie?? oldie but goodie, tell him the story of the boy who cried wolf.

At this age, children do not know the difference between reality and fantasy. I recommend you read some child development books to learn what you can expect of children at their different stages of life, so you can set realistic goals. Best wishes.

well they are only 3 you have to give them a break. I have a four year old nephew he doesnt lie but he at times tells those little fibs that make you giggle. Depending on how severe the situation is, i think he/she will grow out of it. good luck!

It's a pretty natural thing for a little kid. If you don't make a big deal out of it he'll probably stop. Try rewarding for honesty (because punishments will probably make him want to hid his behavior more, which will lead to more lies!). Good luck

had BAD problem like that.. punishment didn't help very much. So we finally tried seeing how he liked it. "Get ready and we'll go to McDonalds (in his eyes it was like an amusement park to other kids)

Then, when he got ready, we said we weren't going.... only took a few times for him to see if wasn't "fun" to lie.... cut out 90% of it in one week.
