Mr. Martin here is mostly right. There are around 2,200 known paintings and drawings. But the important word here is 'known' because Van Gogh did not keep personal records where he recorded each painting or drawing. It's highly likely there were many more that, over the years, were either lost, painted over by other artists, destroyed for some reason or have not been recognized as his.

He produced all of his work, some 900 paintings and 1100 drawings, during the last ten years of his life. Most of his best-known work was produced in the final two years of his life, and in the two months before his death he painted 90 pictures.
