Oil companies say to change oil every 3000 miles so you buy more oil. Car companies will tell you, you can go longer so they get the money when your car breaksdown. Your best bet is to change your oil every 4-5k miles.
P.S. You are only supposed to use synthetic oil if the car has always been running on synthetic oil. Your not supposed to switch from conventional to synthectic. I dont really know why but thats what a few mechanics have told me

Manual and dealership state 5000 miles or 2x year which ever is first. Just asked that question last week at dealership for a 2005 Corolla S. Any longer sludge issues, but service advisor states that there is NO PROBLEM going 5000 miles.

Whatever the manual says. Every 3000 miles is a bit excessive, but the oil change industry always recommends this for obvious reasons.

With my Camry I4, the oil gets really nasty at 5K intervals, so I went to 3K changes. I think the reason is the little 4 banger is working a lot harder to haul my big b u t t AND the car than a V6 or V8 would.
My Tundra, with 7 quarts, is fine at 7.5K, and the oil is still pretty good looking, but HEY, filters and oil are still pretty cheap.

I vote for 5000 miles with a good quality oil filter and good oil, Mobil 1 if you can afford it. Since you have to change the oil less, use synthetic oils

Use synthetic or a blend and do it 5-10k miles, depending on the driving conditions. Heavy highway -- a full synthetic in a 4 cylinder can go almost 10k miles without issues.

Check your warranty. Most say 3000 mi or 3 months which ever is first, but some later models do say 5000 mi. If you do not follow the recommendation it will void your warranty.
