he said:
“ if they put the sun in my right hand and the moon in my left hand, in order that I should give up this mission of mine, I will never do it until I die in defence of this truth, or God decides whatever He Pleases.”

This is just a guess...

In mysticism, both the sun and moon symbolize dualism - just like yin and yang in Taoism that create the universe. If I am right, Mohammad be given the sun and moon can be interpreted as he be given the universal power as the Judge of everything - he has the sole authority to judge what's right and wrong, good and bad, etc as well as the power to create and manifest everything, be it gold or diamond, etc.

And he realized there's one power that's more powerful than these sun and moon - that is the power of truth and enlightenment, the power that penetrates worldly illusions and enter the realm of God with true spiritual insight. That's why he refuse.

But then, that's just my guess...

Jajakallah kher
Thanks for ur most Important questionn.

Actually when Qurish leader offer him that He may get everything (like leadership, a beautiful woman etc.) if he stopped canvassing Islam or stop to say about false worship. Then He say this quote.

Today we see our Muslims leader compromise with the Kufor (Disbelievers thought). But that's not allowed by Islam.
This Hadith is most Important now. Islam never compromise any Kufor(Democracy, communism, capitalism).

Islam is a only one and unique system.

Mo did NOT say that!

Mo said “ if they put the sun in my right hand and the moon in my left hand, in order that I should give up this mission of mine, I will never do it until I die in defence of this truth, or ALLAH decides whatever he Pleases.”

THERE IS BIG DIFFERENCE BETWEEN allah and THE GOD!

MO never knew THE GOD. That is why he had to dig out the Village god of Takrit, named allah to deify it.

Muhammad said this because he understood two factors of governance:
First, he recognized the importance of the principal of the separation of church and state.
Second, he recognized the truth in the statement 'power corrupts - absolute power corrupts absolutely'

;-D It is a pity that world leaders today do not have this insight.

Symbolically, if you were to have the sun (source of all light and energy for our life's system) and the moon (symbol of regularity, time, calendar, rule of our lives), then you'd be made pretty powerful, and yet the Prophet (blessed be His memory) is saying here that this would be like a bribe to keep him from the mission of defending the truth (Allah and all Allah commands of us).

Hence, just as Jesus denied Satan when tempted with all riches and power, when Jesus told the Evil One, "Tempt not the Lord," so too did Mohamed proclaim his steadfastness in serving Allah, the will of Allah.

I'm sure Mohammad was sincere. I just think he was sincerely wrong. Why should I believe Christianity over Islam? Because I don't believe Islam is a true revelation from God. Islam and Christianity disagree drastically. They both say they are coming from God. They can't both be true, not if they disagree. One of them has to be wrong. They disagree in many, many places. Let's just take one of those disagreements. Christianity says that Jesus Christ died 2000 years ago on a cross and that's written in their Holy book, the Bible which they say is coming from God. Islam says Jesus Christ did not die on a cross 2000 years ago and that's written in their Holy book the Koran(which they also say is coming from God). My question is, what actually happened 2000 years ago? You can't have it both ways. Either he did die on a cross or he didn't die on a cross. If he did then Islam is not a true revelation from God because Islam says he didn't die on a cross and it says that's coming fromGod(can God be wrong?). If he didn't die on a cross than christianity is wrong. Why should I believe Muslim scholars who came much later(700 years later) over the apostles and writers of the New Testament who were either eye witnesses or they got it from eye witnesses(regardless, all of them lived during that time period). Also, the church fathers and early scholars of the church all testified that he died on a cross. Even extra biblical historians such as Tacitus, Suetonius, Pliny the younger, Josephus and other historians who lived during that time period have testified that Jesus died on a cross. Actually, the only historians that you'll ever find anywhere(religious or secular) who will say that Jesus didn't die on a cross are Muslim historians. If i'm reading an eye witness account of a speech that Richard the lion-hearted gave in about 1190AD and you come up to me and say "no, that's not what he said.....let me tell you what he really said". My answer to you is going to be "why should I believe you over this writer....he was an eye witness.........you came along 900 years later". Similarly, The writers of the New Testament were either eye-witnesses or they got it from eye-witnesses. They were there on the scene. I'll take their word over Mohammads any day and twice on tuesday since Mohammad came 600 years later.

In the first three years of his mission forty people (men and women) accepted Islam. This small group comprised of youth as well as older people from a wide range of economic and social background. The Prophet was directed by a recent revelation to start preaching Islam to everyone. He then began to recite revelations to people in public and invite them to Islam. The Quraish, leaders of Makkah, took his preaching with hostility. The most hostile and closest to the prophet was his uncle Abu Lahab and his wife. Initially, they and other leaders of Quraish tried to bribe him with money and power including an offer to make him king if he were to abandon his message. When this did not work, they tried to convince his uncle Abu Talib to accept the best young man of Makkah in place of Muhammad and to allow them to kill Muhammad. His uncle tried to persuade the Prophet to stop preaching but the Prophet said: "O uncle, if they were to put the sun in my right hand and the moon in my left hand to stop me from preaching Islam, I would never stop. I will keep preaching until Allah makes Islam prevail or I die."

That, was a powerful acknowledgement, of how he felt about the "truth!"

I think, it behoves the rest of us, to raise our level of expectation when it comes, not only hearing the truth, but to speaking it as well........for the goodness and preservation of mankind!!

Does it really matter? Anyone can say anything. If someone today.. in the year 2006 said that a messenger of God came to him, he would be put away for evaluation. Would any of us actually listen to him ?

Because the pagan Makkans made a proposal to him saying that they will give him power and wealth if he would stop preaching Islam.

He made this statement to show them that money and power were of no interest to him and not a part of his mission.

Allah gives to whom He wills.
