If medicine really interests you but the lengthy amount of school is a turn off (keep in mind that amount of school is not cheap) then there are other avenues you can go down. You could look into nursing school which I think is 4 years of undergrad. Or you could become a physician assistant which is a 2 year graduate program at many schools (plus the 4 years of undergrad). If you don't want to go through 4 years of undergrad either you can graduate high school and get a 2 year associates degree and work in the hospital as a tech (xray tech, surgical tech, etc.). All in all, studying medicine does not mean just being a doctor and there are many options depending on the amount of time and money you have to put into it. Good luck with what ever path you choose.

After high school, 4 years to get a Bachelor of Science degree. Once accepted to Medical School (not an easy task), 4 more years. Followed by a 1 yr. internship, 2 yr. residency. Then if you want to specialize (ie., surgeon, psychiatrist, pediatrician, etc.) you have 4 more years.

Once you start studying Medicine or any other science for that matter on a professional basis, the study doesn't stop just because you have finished formal studies, it's a life time commitment.

4 year college degree
4 years med school
3-8 years residency depending

Residency:
>>3 years for internal medicine, family practice, pediatrician
-------if you want to specialize it is 1-3 years more depending (cardiology, Gastrointestinal...)

>>5 years general surgery
-------if you want to specialize it is 2-4 years more depending (ENT, Plastic...)

================
Internship is the same as first year of residency.

Those are approximate numbers but fairly accurate.

Medicine is called a 'practice' because you have to practice for the rest of your life. There was a class of students on their first day of medical school, the professor came in and said, "Half of what you learn in medical school is nonsense - the trouble is we don't know which half it is".
