it's a cardboard cutout to given to military families in place of a flesh and blood parent while they're away serving in Iraq.

I just realized how much like primitive animals we are, longing for comfort in strange infantile ways and so easily distracted from reality. It's like watching a dog nuzzling her pet toy when her entire litter is sold and gone.

Well, I suppose for some, it is much like having a photograph, only on steroids.

Leave 'em alone. Let them have their flat daddy. If they're happy with it, how does that affect you?

When I was in Korea, my nearly two year old had a photo of me beside her bed. Is that creepy? Pathetic? Sad?

I really wish I had a good cynical answer for that, but it's just too bizarre.

Just like having a picture of someone. What's sick and pathetic is your thinking. I guess you never missed anyone who is close to you. Unless you are some pathetic loser who has no one.
