2 weeks ago, I went to the dentist after having a severe toothache. Routine check up and an x-ray where I claimed the teeth was hurting but nothing was found.
The teeth hurting are the ones usually very sensitive to hot/cold, I told the dentist this, to which he then said it may just be the sensitiveness working up, I was recommended to use toothpaste specific for sensitive teeth and it should get better. It didn't.
I now figured that the pain was coming from the nerves, rather than the teeth or gums as such. The pain comes on completely randomly but I almost always have a big episode just before I sleep. The pain is only on the left side. I do have sensitive teeth and gums so I won't rule that out as a possibility, it just doesn't look like that pain from sensitive teeth can be so persistent.
Do I really just have sensitive teeth or does it look like something else (e.g., root canal)? What else can I take/do to help sensitive teeth besides flossing and the stupid toothpaste??

Ok, I think I'm gonna be expecting the worst. So can someone tell me the reason for a root canal?? There are no cavities in my mouth right now...the only thing I can think of is that my dad has really bad gums and teeth and I vaguely remember that he may have had a root canal before...

The dentist would know if you needed a root canal by the x -rays. It could be that you grind your teeth at night. If you have a cold that could be a reason. Make sure you brush with a soft bristled tooth brush. Don't scrub your teeth, this can wear away enamel. Brush in little circles. You can also apply the sensitive teeth toothpaste with your finger to the specific teeth when needed. If you absolutley can't stand it, go see another dentist. Tell them the dentist you saw last and they can have the x-rays sent over to them before your appointment. It doesn't hurt to get a second opinion, I have worked with some terrible dentists I myself would never go to.

I use to work for a dentist as his assistant..While pain in your mouth or a toothache can be many diferent things with similar pain. It can be hard to pinpoint sometimes......
You can have an abcess just starting......You can have a pinhole cavity somewhere.....
You can have an infected sinus cavity,( which would show up on an exray)
You can have TMJ which feels like a toothache..Most patients with this grind their teeth at night a little and don't know it. Therefore applying pressure with clenched teeth.
I had the same problem a few times b/4....TMJ was one of my problems and I had to wear a mouth gard at night...
Another time I had had some bad pain for a couple weeks after I had a filling.......The problem was that the doctor needed to smoothe down the filling and make it flatter than what it was....He finally used that blue paper strip and saw how high the filling was.....One other time I had so much pain I wanted to throw myself against the wall literally It was BAD.. While he could find nothing wrong, he sent me to a specialist who extracted teeth only...........Here my dentis drilled the cavity out and drilled through the bone...........Tooth had to come out!!
Oh and by the way..You don't get root canals. They are performed on your tooth that has to have the nerves taken out!
That is a root canal...........

I would get a second opinion, and from someone a friend recommends because they have had good experience with the dentist. If you are having pain in your teeth it needs to be addressed and if the dentist you saw first is not willing to look into the root cause you need someone who will.

You need a second opinion. Toothache is the worst and you can't live like that. Also he has stuff that he can put on sensitive teeth which he didn't. He's a quack, go to someone else.

Have the same thing as you - Pressure in pain in front teeth under my sinus that travels back and forth from my molar right under sinus and settles on one of my front teeth on right side - the tooth which has had a root canal done Two unnecessary root canals later - the pain is still there and can become a 10 out of 10 Always starts as bad pressure from inside like my mouth is trying to push the tooth out or all the teeth out Unaffected by anything except I never have it when I wake up. 2 root canals later - the pain is still there Had been to 3 dentists - 2 emergency room. It is as I feel - sinus related and always starts like pressure from inside my maxillary sinus. They don't have enough professionals in Emergency to do simple endoscopy of sinuses!! They have lots of foreign doctors who can - but those are driving cabs/ This is Canada for you I am on a verge of suicide because of how bad the pain is and because nothing seems to help! I thought sinus and some infection pressing on nerve was the cause for this....but in case of bottom teeth it may well be Trigeminal Neuralgia or TMD Check those online I am afraid there isn't much hope for us - doctors look people like you and me up and down like we have 3 heads and assume we are making it up to get drugs. As for me - I don't know if I will live through this. My work requires precision and cognitive stability I can no longer work - I can no longer sleep. Life lost all meaning for me. But humans always have a choice. If you are like me and saw many professionals all of whom were either reluctant or powerless to help just remember - we are not helpless animals who can't take matters into our own hands to find quick and painless way out - if it hurts you so bad that life lost all meaning. I don't care for scummunity guidelines on this one. You are a human being - not just another animal. No one but you knows what's best for you but yourself. Please don't take this as encouragement but please know - many people like me will understand your choice. It's not cowardice - don't listen to fools - cowardice is behaving like a helpless beast - waiting for a divine miracle that won't ever happen/

Visit another detist and have one more set of x-rays. Sounds like a cavity, or perhaps a wisdom tooth coming in and pushing into the root of another tooth.

I think it sounds like you should have a root canal.
