A switch completes a circuit. Same as if you were to hold two wires in each hand. Once you touch the wires together, the switch is in the on position, take the wires apart, the switch is off. There are 3 way 4 way ect. switches which act on the same principle, You have one hot wire, and 3 or 4 connections whatever wire you touch with the hot one means the switch is on that position. In the off position it opens the circuit. The power or signal cannot flow. In the on position it closes and completes the circuit. The signal or power can pass to the rest of the circuit.
A switch that is closed is on. A switch that is open is off.

A switch is simply a type of gate: if it's open, then the electricity can pass though. If it's closed, the electricity-- or electrons, to be excact--cannot pass.
