I bought a basket bed for my cat today and a bag of catnip came with it, but as far as I'm concerned I thought catnip was something that were in cat toys, not something edible.

smoke it. Or rub it in the basket. The latter is probably what they had in mind.

cat nip isnt actually a "drug" for cats per se
the smell is simular to the smell of the hormones cats produce durring sex
thats why they get so excited about it, and its also why some cats just dont care too i guess, there are celibate humans, why not cats i suppose
my cat likes to roll in it, some cats eat it, some scratch it. my friend has a fat lazy cat but when the catnip is brought out she runs all around the room
i dont know how catnip would help your cat sleep though as far as putting it in her bed, it would make her want to go there often, but i think she would be too excited to sleep

It is edible (to the cat) and they love it! It is a mild drug effect they recieve from it and most cats will do just about anything for it, including using their new bed if the catnip is sprinkled in it.

Look for a zipper in the bottom of the bed, there is usually a pouch there. The cat will smell it and try to rip the bed apart to get at it. Most beds are strong enough though not to tear. He will calm down after a little while. It is supposed to make the cat prefer the bed to the couch, chair, etc. But my cat still prefers a number of other spots, none of them in the bed.

just sprinkle a little on his bed or you can take an old sock and put the catnip in it and tie it closed for instant cat toy

I would spread it on the cat bed, your cat will enjoy that, I also put catnip on my rug for them to lay in and play with. They love it.

It's like weed and acid for your cat...they can eat it, lick it and roll in it. They will love you. Be carful, some cats are cuddly on catnip, and others are more feral. It wears off pretty quick and then they pass out.
