the exorbitant cost may be a factor.

Well, it is because of fear that my mother didn't go until it was really bad, and she had to have a root canal done.
As well, the high cost of dental treatment is very discouraging if you do not have insurance.
Also, there needs to be more education and public awareness about how to take care of your teeth. My parents do not floss and I never got into the habit until this year. Perhaps if I had flossed as a child, my teeth wouldn't have so many caries as I do now. Now my dentist recommends prescription fluoride toothpaste and fluoridated floss for me.

Fear. Patients tell me they didn't come in earlier because they were afraid they would have to have all their teeth pulled and then since they waited so long, they do have to have their teeth pulled. It's a self fulfilling prophecy. It's also sad when the don't take care of their teeth because they "know" they will have dentures by age 30 because their parents did. Ok, well, maybe you should stop and think about why your parents did!!!

i'll tell you why. a large proportion of the population does not fix their teeth until they hurt, because if nothing hurts, nothing's wrong, right? i honestly wish that cavities and periodontal disease were painful, or at least uncomfortable. not to punish people, mind you. the perception of pain exists out of self-preservation; things hurt because something bad is happening. if people were in discomfort because of the accumulation of tartar around their gums or cavities forming in the pits/grooves of their teeth, i honestly believe that most people would be driven to correctly care for their teeth on a regular basis.
negligent people come to the dentist once the amount of pain they are experiencing couldn't possibly be worse than what a dentist would inflict on them. they see going to the dentist to get a shot in their mouth, to crank their mouth open for an extended time, to experience the discomfort of the drill's vibrations & noise, and to pay a lot of money as a nuisance rather than a necessity. all that effort for minimal short-term rewards equals virtually non-existent incentives for the short-sighted.

Because people cannot afford the exhorbitant cost.
I do not have abcesses but my teeth could do with fixing, do you think I can afford to go to a dentist?
the answer is NO.
I have to live with it and one day I might get abcesses, but there is not much I can do about it when dentists charge crazy out of these world prices for treatment.

Because even with insurance dentists charge WAY too much money! Christ....With insurance it still cost me over $100 just to have deep cleaning done on one side of my mouth. If dentists were so concerned about people coming in they need to lower their prices!

I've seen patients come in with no prior symptoms of their nerves in their teeth dying before an abscess appears. Those who have huge holes/bombed out teeth it's probably a cost factor.

Well, it IS often because of fear. And perceived expense. Or inconvenience. Or the belief that "it will go away."
