Because it's a free* credit report

Because someone wants to sell you something that will make your credit score worse. You can get a free report once a year by writing to one of the reporting agencies - Equifax, etc.

You probably don't. You probably have to pay for your CREDIT SCORES! The report, in and of itself isn't helpful. Lenders use CREDIT SCORES to determine your qualifications and rates. The credit report doesn't tell you the most important aspect of your report, which is your SCORE. That's probably what they want you to buy.
