pls forgive me for my ignorance but I understand feet have some 'dirty' connotation in the muslim religion, they facing the soil, etc.

On the other hand, feet don't have any particular significance in other religions or cultures.

There's also a debate about whether a muslim woman can show her feet in public or not. I'm just interested in knowing the opinion of cultured muslim people.

Thank you for your answer

well -- if u would have noticed --

most muslim women will cover until their ankles while men will cover above their ankles, esp during prayer -- it is a symbol of modesty and to control over the pride and arrogance. that was the main purpose of hijab too in Islam -- MODESTY.

as far as feet being dirty, i well am not sure -- but we say "Praise be to God", when we put our right feet in new home or guest or relatives place, mosque. it is supposed to bring prosperity and good will to both the guest and host. i think that is a tradition and it is practised even in Hinduism with new brides.

and yes u wont see many muslims, however rich they are, crossing their feet in front of their elders -- it is a mark of respect for elders. it is a tradition rather than any rule.

Its not the religion so much as the culture. Feet are considered dirty, something very private and personal. They are beneath the head and heart, thus by touching someone with your feet/shoes it is a sign of shame, and not too honorable for the person doing it either.

True, feet specifically might not have a particular significance in other cultures, but each region has its "taboo" thing, that is considered very personal. In the West, it is the application or view of hygiene products. Deodorant, makeup, etc... are all things that should stay at home or at least hidden, since it represents who you are before you recreate your public self-image.

In islam the real thing is to hide your beauty from the starngers anf "mohrimat" and there is no teaching about not showing her feet , but as you know that there are always some extriemists in all cultures so some says that women should'nt show.
basicly Islam is really easy to follow but the wrong preachers are making it difficult day by day and not understanding that they are making there way to hell.

I don't know where you got the idea that feet are considered dirty in Islam.

They are not.

Culturally, in South Asia and South East Asia, it is considered a cultural taboo to have the soles of your feet point towards elders.

They have no basis in Islam.

The word feet appears 233 times in the New American Bible. Everything from washing to happy feet carrying the Word of God over the mountains. I would say feet are important in Christianity.

before going to prayers, washing ur feet is part of a cleaning process called "wodoo".

all i know is a Muslim woman had to cover all her body except her face and her hands. and a Muslim man had to cover what's between his belly button to his knees.

They are considered to be the things at the bottom of your legs that you keep your socks on.

If your legs are not terminated properly at the bottom end, walking could cause your legs to fray at the ends
