Pain is the body saying that something is wrong, it is a indicator that tells you , so you can do something to correct the problem. As for the hurting that happens after, It is the inflamation of the part of the body that has been destroyed and the nerve damage, as time goes on the body has less pain due to the body putting back together what has been torn apart.

Maybe it was nerve damage and shock. The next day all your tissue and insides are screaming because of all the trauma.
Maybe you should change your playground and your playmates.

Why are you asking this? Do you get slashed at by knives a lot? Do you think that this is normal? If the answer to my second question is yes, why aren't you dead? Does no one else see the oddness of this question?

Adrenaline
The body knows you are in big trouble, and pain would interfere with "fight or flight"
The next day, the pain is telling you to be careful with it so it can heal.

because it's not the cutting that usually hurts, its the healing. your nerves are not aware of themselves and it the regrowth, so to speak, that you feel. Paper cuts are the same way, usually. You don't have pain with the initial trauma it's the healing that your feeling.

I agree with Terraform, it's adrenaline. Also pain is subjective. In other words, what might bother me, might not bother you and vice-versa.
