Those things SUCK!! (no pun intended)...
Actually they don't suck at all, they burrow under your skin. That's where the mark that looks like a bite comes from. And yes, clear polish works. Ok, colored polish works also, if you want to be different. The polish works by cutting off their air. What happens to them after they die is beyond me (I never really thought about that one...carrying around dead chiggers... EEEEEEEW)

I grew up in Texas where Chiggers are prevalent. My mom's cure was clear fingernail polish over each bite. As a nurse, I'm not sure this is the most healthy thing....but it works! Here is some chigger info: http://www.pestproducts.com/chiggers.htm

yep stay out of the grass and weeds during the summer and you wont get them you can get a wash cloth and a bottle of vinegar poor onto washcloth then lightly rub on the little red spot it will back out and will also help with itching...or you can go to walmart or a drug store and buy this product called chigger stick it will help with the itching....They burrow into your skin and like a tick they inject stuff to thin your blood so they can eat drink it

I grew up in Kansas and they will bite you and make you itch something terrible. Here's what one site said to do for it:
The objective of treatment is to relieve the itching. Antihistamines and corticosteroid creams or lotions may be helpful.
