Because when you get sick you turn "green" in color, shakespeare thought that the feeling of jealousy is like feeling sick...thus green...

It is well known among Shakespearean scholars that the bard stole or "re-introduced" many concepts in his work.

Thus, the better question is from whom did Shakespeare take the notion of "the green-eyed monster of jealousy?"

Green was associated with sick people, as a lot sick people have a greenish tint to them. Shakespeare was saying that people were sick with jealousy.

Green is the color of envy. Envy is the same as jealousy.

im totally guessin but green is the colour of money and money is one of the reason why ppl get jealous.....money and love. i might be wrong cuz money in shakespeare's time prolly wasnt green...o well :)
