Most ANY type of dog would get between you and danger, if you have been decent to it. (A chihuahua would protect you until it's last gasp. THey don't know they weigh six pounds.)
We run a shelter in the boondocks, and all our adult dogs are mixed breed mutts, but protect our place, us, the stray kittens and puppies, and the rest of the critters. They let us know when strangers or visitors approach by barking ferociously. We don't tolerate biting or aggressive behavior, there are too many of them, so barking is the extent of their "protection." But we also listen to them.
If there's a visitor in particular they don't like, and are reluctant to obey our "Hush" command, then we are more cautious also.
You didn't say how old you are, or what sort of protection you require under what circumstances, but that can have a lot to do with your choices. Are you in an apartment, or in a city situation with lots of pedestrians going by constantly? Are you in a neighborhood with lots of kids?
You don't want a dog so large you can't control it. Nor do you want to train the dog to be aggressive because it's "cool." Lawsuits and prison are not cool, which could happen if the dog kills someone's kid because it squeals or runs (like prey.)
Why not rescue a mutt from the pound, treat it SO good it adores you, and believe me, it will get between you and danger if the time ever came. Meanwhile, you have a great companion that doesn't risk putting you in jail.
Good luck to you on your choice.

Well when it comes to getting a dog is to get a book on different dogs. Then chose on behavior and how well it responds to you. The best way to find the dog for you is to go to the Humane society and see what you can find, but if you want a pear breed then got to a pet store. My suggestions are German Shepard, Golden Retriever or Collie or a good mix breed

All dogs are naturally protective. Get a good mannered dog. Yellow labs are great, and not agressive. If you get a WELL BRED and loving German Shepherd. they will be protective. But be SURE the temperament of this breed is good. Happy, loving puppies are what you want to look for, and do NOT try to train it to protect you. The dog will do that naturally.

I like the sheperds. Dobermans are sweet and will love you to death. The german sheperd is more aggressive than the border collie or australian shepards. All sheperds need exercise. if you have the energy you can set up a gym for your dog, by putting poles in the ground, to run around. a board and a concrete block will make a see saw to run up and down., then more blocks and boardsand you have an obastacle to crawl under, For a while you will get a work out,but they learn fast and love it[doing what dogs do] Does not require a large yard.

Airdale Terrier-
King of the Terrier, that is nonallergenic and doesn't shed (big plus)
The Airedale was one of the first breeds used for police duty in Germany and Great Britian. From 1864 and on, the earlier Airedales were called Working, Waterside, and Bingley Terriers. The breed was used for wartime guard, messenger duty, rodent control, hunting birds and game.

All dogs are protective, when they love their owner. Ask a mailman! Even a toy Poodle will fight to protect his owner.
My best advice is to DO YOUR HOMEWORK. Research dog breeds, and pick them based on your lifestyle (active? laid back? lazy?) and on personality traits you think are compatible. Don't just pick a dog 'cuz its Big. That is NOT a good reason to own a dog.
Another suggestion: Once you get a dog, Please, please please get it some training! You can even take puppy pre-school at your local petsmart to teach it a few manners. Especially when it comes to the large breeds...its best if you train it and socialize it when its young.

German shepherds are great protective dogs and also are friendly if raised correctly. Rottweilers can also be great family dogs as well as protective (have to have a firm hand with them though). Labs and retrievers are great friendly dogs, though I don't know that people find them to be intimidating enough to be protective.

I have a German Sheppard and a boxer, both are great dogs, but the boxer, wins HANDS DOWN. I am on my second boxer and they are just great dogs in so many aspects. If you own a boxer you will be guaranteed at least one laugh a day. You won't be sorry

German Shepherds are good dogs for that. And honestly so are Pit Bulls. Please do not think they are vicious because they not by nature, more than anything they LOVE their masters. Dogs are truly products of their masters, Pit Bulls by nature are not aggressive they are trained to be. Their first desire is to please their masters, no matter what that consists of. I have one and he is the worlds BIGGEST BABY. Loves dogs, kids and people. But everyone went to hurt a family member or his pal (my Lab) he lets you know he is not happy.
