some of y'all gave some really good advice. now to the girl that made the comment that i was stupid and didn't need a dog. i have studied with our local vet for years we've never ran across this type of problem be4 and yes you can give a dog and or cat bendryl it helps with allgeries. i take in homeless animals that no one wants. eva jo has a problem she climbs on stuff like a cat would. and posion control charges $50 a phone call

Aww, poor dog. Just wait it out. The sudafed will work it's way out of her system eventually.
See if she'll drink. Water will help it leave her system faster. Until then, just keep close to her and talk to her, pet her, etc. That will help keep her calm and less afraid of what's going on.

As you already know, sudafed is a stimulant. The thing we worry about the most is cardiac arrest, especially in a small dog like her. Even though it was several hours ago that she ingested it, you need to still consider taking her to an ER vet tonight and have her checked out. They may give something to calm her down and help keep her heartrate and blood pressure at normal levels. She may also need IV fluids. Some vets also give activated charcoal, but it may have been too long at this point.
Calling the Animal Poison Control Center is actually a good idea. They can take your info and have a treatment protocol ready for when you take her in. All you have to do is give the vet your case # and they can call and talk with a poison control vet for instructions. The # is 1-888-426-4435.
And the vet you talked to is wrong - she CAN still die from this, even all these hours later! Good luck!

OK

GET A NEW VET!!!

Call other vets... I mean it

psuedophed is a stimulant and it can KILL a small dog in very small amounts..
Also who told you to give benedryl?? The vet????

This is an antihistamine and although it can make an animal tired it will not counteract the effects of psuedophed!

Givent he fact it has been so long... you are likely out of hte woods but I would not promise that.. there are secondary complications and damage to heart etc.. that can and do occur with this type of ingestion...
CALL ANOTHER VET

then make sure you take this dog to a qualified vet not the one you called at first as soon as possible to make sure there are no permanent damages from this mishap...

Meanwhile...keep calm, keep him quiet and cool, and provide water not food..... she may drool and basically her system in hyped up as if she was on speed... too much of it.... 20 cups of coffee... so if you can not take her in tonight or find anyone who will see her keep her quiet... calm and do what you can to try to keep her cool and let this stuff get through her system....

The fact she is young will help... if this was an older dog ..she'd be dead already .. younger dogs have stronger hearts.

I can not stress to you how bad this is.... please make sure you get her checked if not ASAP for sure even after she seems ok...

Also not that I need to say this... but make sure all your meds of all kinds are out of reach of dog..

Little buggers get into everything dont they!!?

Good Luck!

At this point the medicine is in her system and there really isn't anything you can do but let it run it's course.

Since her system is already revved up, I wouldn't suggest letting her get too worked up or giving her anymore medicine. Her little liver and kidneys are busy processing that medicine out and you probably shouldn't put more strain on them with other chemicals.

I also would suggest calling another vet because your dog should have some tests run to make sure she does not have liver or kidney damage. I am sorry to say that Pseudoephedrine (Sudafed) is considered toxic to dogs.

I hope your girl makes it through! I am so sorry to hear that this happened.

For future reference- if you suspect your dog has consumed something like Sudafed or another toxic substance you can trigger vomiting by forcing it to drink a 50/50 mixture of Hydrogen Peroxide and water. You can do this by squirting it into the dogs throat with a needless syringe.

I would call a different vet....don't think he/she was right to tell you to give benedryl on top of the sudafed! Since she is a small dog..I am really surprised the vet did not have you bring her in to make her throw up. If the vets are closed...you should have one of those 24 hour vets nearby where you can at least talk to someone and get some straight answers.

My dog used to steal my wine. She'd run around the house in circles for an hour and then lay down and sleep for about 8 hours straight, drunk. I am guessing your dog is drunk. Sudafed contains sufedrine and is a drug that causes shakiness. The benedryl should have caused the animal to slow down, but ... well, reactions are dfferent with different people/animals.

Maybe you should give her a warm bath and wrap her in warm blankets and hold her a bit. I seriously doubt she is going to die, but she has been drugged.

Oh yeah, I give my German Shepard benedryl to help him sleep when the fleas are so bad he can't stand it. He gets shots regulary, the vet recommended it. Be careful how much benedryl you ever give a dog especially the size of yours.

Sudafed and Benadryl should have done the same thing- put her out to sleep! Did you tell the doc you gave her extra meds? I would make rice water- use 2 cups water 1/2 cup rice and some bullion (those little square beef or chicken things) and mix it all up- BOIL it til the rice is soft- you will have water left over but this is good for sore tummies in dog/puppies and sick pets. Make sure you use correct water so it is not strong... flushing her system with this will help it pass easier I hope- good luck hon!

I wish I had a better answer for you but maybe I can shed some light on your fired up pooch. A friend called me one night and told me that his rott got into some magic mushrooms, I asked him how much did he eat? he said a whole circle K coffee cup full!... ( that's about 12 oz. of shrooms.) I asked, what is he doing? he said just laying on his front paws and watching every thing that goes by but he doesn't move his head, just his eyes. I said unless he goes into convulsions, leave him along and let him enjoy his buzzz. I thing that's good advise for you too. good luck.
