Scallops are the family Pectinidae of bivalve molluscs. Like the true oysters (family Ostreidae), they have a central adductor muscle, and thus their shells have a characteristic central scar marking its point of attachment. However, the adductor muscle of scallops is larger and more developed than that of oysters because they are active swimmers and the sole migratory bivalve. Their shell shape tends to be highly regular, recalling the archetypal form of a seashell.
Scallops may be attached to a substrate by a structure called a byssus, or cemented to their substrate (eg. Hinnites spp.). They can also be free living. A scallop can swim by rapidly opening and closing its shell. This method of rapidly opening and closing its shell is also a defense technique, protecting it from any threats. There is a definite whistling sound upon propulsion that the scallops make.

scallops are shellfish. They come in a shell, yes since they live in a shell (umm.. so far I haven't said much :_)) when you find them in scallop dishes, they look like white semi-cylindrical things that if cooked correctly are not rubbery, they should just MELT in your mouth.. yum I am getting hungry for them and it's all your fault! grrrr.. I love scallops. Oh, sometimes people will serve something called "scalloped potatoes" but there are no scallops in there. the potatoes are cut in slices or "scallops". ok, there, is that all you needed to know? :-)

Yes it is a mollusk with a nice firm texture and clean flavor, but they must be properly rinsed while alive in sand free water, or else, they can be gritty when prepared.
The shell is symmetrial, and was formerly and maybe currently used by Shell Oil company as their logo.
