What if the discoveries and scientific acheivements accomplished by "wasting billions and billions of dollars" could turn out to help people living here on Earth. If not for Space exploration the very medium with which we are communicating right now would not exist. They had to send rockets into space and improve the program to place communications satellites into space.
Many biological experiments are carried out in space that the exact conditions cannot be replicated here on Earth. This research could produce cures to countless diseases. Medical equipment such as difbrilators and EKG machines were trickled down from the space program.
Refractory tiles and flame retardent fabrics have also been an accomplishment attributed to space exploration. If not for these achievements and countless more like them the world would be pretty much bogged down in a pre WW2 state. A society that does not advance becomes stagnant then it falls into entropy and ultimately destruction.

It is not a waste. There has been lot of benefits sending space ships up. How do you think all those TV Sats got up there? That can show things like google earth.
And Jesus said The poor will always be with us.

No, it's not a waste.
The technology developed to put man into space has benefited the people of earth in many ways. Estimates put that benefit from 3 to 7 dollars for every dollar spent directly on the space program. For example - sensors used to monitor the health of astronauts are used in hospitals to monitor heart attack victims. Do you know anyone that's have a heart attack? Space technology may have helped save them.
Another one - new and better composite materials like Kevlar and carbon fiber helps make modern vehicles lighter and stronger. Know anyone that has been in a car crash? Space-age materials may have saved their life, or reduced the injuries that they would otherwise have received. For that matter, do you know anyone that drives a car? Those lighter materials help them get better gas mileage.
One more - space technology has improved computers, and the materials and designs in them. Do you know anyone that uses a computer? (Hint - peek in the mirror). You are benefiting from space technology as you read this. How many computers do you see in the course of your day? Do I really need to tell you that they are all benefiting as well?
Oh, yeah - all those new technologies mean jobs for people that build the items, and the engineers that design new products using those technologies.

There is the hope that the technical developments will make this a better world. Also money is a poor way to measure wealth or help. It is only useful as a trade tool. The desire to measure everything about economics in terms of money is just because it is easy to use and gives a (usualy false) set of numbers to delude people into thinking that they know what is going on.
There are enough resources available to do both space and make this world a better place as well.

No, of course it's not a waste. Programs like this show the world the technical accomplishments of the United States, which makes our space exploration program itself a symbol of national power. If you're looking to feed the poor, join a church or a charity.

The vast majority of the technology that you are currently using in your life developed as a result of space exploration and the manned moon missions. Everything from Corning ware (developed originally as heat shielding) to computer advancements in both hardware and software. ALL of which contribute to the saving of lives.

I think money spent on space programs is fine, but what really gets me is the BILLIONS spent on this war in Iraq and the HUGE salaries for government leaders. Did you know that minimum wage was not raised by congress for TEN YEARS and yet they voted themselves raises EVERY year for 10 years straight?

Unfortunately, this is the disgusting state our human race is reduced to. We dont care what goes on to someone else. All we worry about is how to cover our own backsides. I mean, if all the rich people in Perth can ship off their scrapes to the third wolrd countries, no one will starve. Someone should start a vendetta. I'll surely join in. Serious!

school closures, lack of affordable health care, poverty levels rising, special needs programs for autistic children being cancelled, funding towards homeless shelters, abused women's shelters and addiction programs being scaled back... sure spend the money on going to outer space! Research into cancer, rare diseases, Parkinson's, Hutchinson's, cystic fibrosis.. WHO cares... send them all to the moon! Ageing populations with no place to go, no affordable housing, no pension plans or money for home care workers.. WHO cares... shoot them all out to space in another 500 years.... Yes it's a total and shameful waste of billions upon billions of dollars!

No, and no.
Space exploration has lead to HUGE medical advances that help all of humanity including the poor. It has also contributed to stronger and lighter materials used in vehicles to help conserve gas.
Exploration of space is way too valuable for all of humanity.
