and if you box the exacta, is that the same as a quinella (because they don't always pay the same if you do that)

If you box the exacta, it will cost more but the result will be the same in terms of your chances of winning.

Usually in a race where there is a quinella, I will play the quinella twice instead of boxing the exacta. The cost is the same and the payout will often be a little higher.

A Quinella is similar to an Exacta, except for the fact that is does not matter what order your two horses come in, the payoff will be the same. However, that differs from an Exacta box. If you like two horses and play an Exacta box and your first choice is a longshot and your other choice is a favorite, in most cases you will be rewarded more if your longshot wins the race. (A two dollar payoff on a Quinella pays more than a one dollar Exacta box).

For an exacta you pick what horse or horses you think will win and the horse or horses you think will come place. If you picked the right horses in the wrong order you lose.
For a quinella you pick the horses you think will win or place irregardless of order.
If you box your exacta it will be similar to a quinella with two differences.
1. It will cost more for the bet.
2. It's odds will likely be different. Example if there are one thousand exacta bets all for the same amount and only one percent were for the right combo, and you had the winning ticket you will get a nice payout; it wont be 100:1 because the house takes it's cut. If there are five hundred quinella bets all for the same amount and ninety percent were for the right combo you probably wouldn't even break even after the house took their cut.

An Exacta pays more than a Quinella you can also box an exacta like for instance 1& 2 or 2&1 quinella it can come either way. if you box a exacta you only get 1/2 of the money if you play quinella you get all the money! play an exacta one way you get all the money.
