saintamber, the world isnt all full of evil. what a sad sad viewpoint. every blessing is a good thing on earth. yes there are bad things that happen, but we need to learn things. the earth is a good place, and until you realize that, you will be pretty sad with yourself.

gorgeous, where did i say the bible was the only reasoning for God? You know God exists because of every blessing you ever have. its just something you feel and know. you need to learn.

I am an atheist, and I'd like to counter a couple of statements here. First - I'm usually in a great frame of mind. I think life is usually great, it's worth living, and it's worth working at it to enjoy it. I travel, I volunteer my time to others, I have a great family, I have a good job. I just don't have any beliefs in an afterlife or a higher power. Aside from those last 2, I think that we're very much alike. I ask you - how specifically am I different in any way that doesn't involve a belief in a god? Please reply here - I'll put a watch on this question and check back later.
And I have lots of hope for the future. I hope my son has a great life, I hope my wife and I have many years together, I hope my country can regain a position of respect and leadership in the world.
I do have some fears - chiefly, that the US will become more theocratic as time goes by. I do not begrudge theists their beliefs. The US constitution guarantees freedom of religion as the individual cares to practice it, so long as that practice does not adversely effect another person. In my view, that means that freedom of religion also includes freedom FROM religion.
But the broad history of human kind has been a trend towards more openness and enlightenment, with occasional movements backwards. I think in the long run we will move forward out of this period of theocracy and into a more humanist government, where religion plays such a major role in government.

The same old thing. A person who knows nothing about atheism attempts to initiate a discussion with an accusation of ignorance. The fact is many (if not most) atheists were once "believers," some even devout. So there's no question of atheists not understanding religious sentiment.
The real problem here is that you are incapable of accepting a different view on this topic. Don't you see the hysteria in a view that denies intelligence to an opponent? Do you really think there's any fundamental field of human knowledge in which atheists don't excel in? What is the inherent "ignorance" in a proposition that demands non-mythical answers to questions about the universe?
Ultimately this flailing out at the infidels seems to be more about allaying your own doubts - as if by saying "They don't know!" often and loud enough, other voices won't be heard.

Our purpose in life here is to be HUMAN. What do you think reproductive organs and instincts are for? You cannot deny your primitive nature. Is God randomly there all for nothing? How did God come into existence? I am doubtful of both how God came into existence and how evolution came into existence, but even so, I find it makes more sense to follow what I was designed for rather than to wonder why I was created. I'm not atheist, I just don't agree much with what you say. The physical world is, in actual fact, larger than you may think. Open your mind.

I can kind of see why someone would want to be an atheist personally. So far, I am not, however, I am not too far from dropping any faith and beleifs I do have, because so far, it is looking like God has completely forsaken this earth. Evil far overshadows and type of good left. I think that if He were really there, he would have stepped in by now, or atleast ended this piece of crap called earth that we live in and have ultimately destroyed. I am trying to keep faith, but it dies a little more everyday. Do I think atheists are wrong? Nope. Do I think any major religion is wrong? Nope. We are all entitled to our own beleifs, values, and opinions. Enough said.

I think that atheists are every bit as entitled to their opinions as you are. Their faith or lack thereof is no less sure than yours is to you. I am a Christian, however, I believe I am not called to judge anyone on the basis of their ideas. Only they can convert if they choose to, you cannot convert them. And you will not even make any friends who will politely debate with you in show such a lack of tolerance. Please use a little more discretion when asking your questions.

In reality, you are not one to speak for a people you are not a part of. You have no real way of knowing how we are, who we are, what we feel, how we live, or how happy we are.
I can guarantee you this, the large majority of us are HAPPY.
Ignorant? Hah... We count some of the brightest and the best. Even if the majority are not huge geniuses, MOST are pretty sharp witted and bright people.
And you know what...with evolution (yes that dreaded word), I think there is a large chance that maybe with evolution of human kind, that it is we that have surpassed you. At least those with the mindset like yours.

"Do you think they're just ignorant?"
Nobody in the U.S. is ignorant of Christianity--it's everywhere. I'd say you'd be hard-pressed to find someone in the world who doesn't know who Jesus is. Atheists aren't ignorant of your religion, they just reject it.
"To think there's nothing more to life than just the physical is pretty sad."
To believe in a made-up god is pretty sad. To live your entire life believing that none of it really matters because you're going up to heaven to live with God forever and ever is pretty sad. To live life for an afterlife that doesn't exist is a refusal and a negation of life itself.
"What, we're just here randomly and it's all for nothing?"
What, there is no meaning in life other than God?
"I find that hard to believe."
Just as atheists find your religion hard to believe.
"What do you think is their deal?"
Atheists don't believe in your god. Usually, this is because of the total lack of evidence for His existence.
"Do you agree with me?"
No.
Atheism is widely misunderstood by Christians and adherents to other religious faiths. There are even Christians who will tell outright lies about atheists and atheism.

What others beleive is none of my business to comment on. Though they certainly would not be the most ignorant group among religious debators. That prize usually goes to those who beleive they are "more religious" than most.

If you think atheists see no meaning in life, you're sadly mistaken. We may not have a grand cosmic purpose, but when you hold a loved one in your arms, life has all the meaning it ever needs.
From everything I've experienced and read, atheists find their lives every bit as happy and fulfilling as theists do. I can point you to countless accounts of ex-christians who say their lives became much happier and more fulfilling when they turned away from religion.

As an atheist, I am not offended, merely curious as to how you came to the conclusion you stated. Do you believe that all atheists believe the same thing?
what we're just here randomly and its all for nothing?
-----I do believe that. My life is inconsequential in the grand scheme, but in this time, in this place, I am important, just as you are in your time and place. We are no more than animals. It is not depressing to know that you fit into nature and life, I would that a life of penance and guilt for your sins would be more depressing.
i find that hard to believe. what do you think is their deal?
----I am mentally incapable of believing in a god. You could more easily convince me that I have an invisible arm protruding from my nose than convince me that a god exists, my mind simply rejects it. I made no choice to be an atheist, I simply am. I find theism enormously difficult to believe. I can't imagine what drives people to believe something that is so amazingly false to me. What drives you to believe in something that makes no sense to another human? Wouldn't that make you question your sanity?
do you agree with me? Obviously not. You have shown yourself to be misguided in your attempt to understand the mind a motive of an atheist. I hope that I may have helped.
