There are tons of people damaging the religion. The most damaging ones in my opinion are the ones who think that their single denominations are the only ones who think they are going to heaven. People like this turn it into a hateful religion and make me want to leave and never come back to Christiantiy. Also I think this is why so many people are leaving the faith these days. Does any one else think this?

If people are abandoning Christ because of what other people are doing--or what they think other people are doing--they never belonged to Christ in the first place.

Believing Truth does not create hatred. Believing falsehood does. If someone is hateful regarding their faith, they don't have any.

If someone believes that Christianity can be killed by people, they don't know Christ. Christ cannot be defeated.

We all damage the religion whenever we fail to walk the talk and love as Jesus did. The single denomination wars are pretty much over w/ the exception of the more fundamental brands. The "singles" started cutting back in the 1940s.
If you are amidst such people, check out some other churches. I think you will be overjoyed at the acceptance of you and others.
As to why people are leaving the church - we can't compete in a hedonistic society unless we change ourselves as well.

Christianity is not a religion to want to leave, you either have a relationship with Christ or you don't...you should never allow the actions of others determine what you have faith in, your faith should be only in the finished work at the cross..BTW Many will leave the faith in the end times, only those who persevere will make it, don't be foolish and allow Satan win the battle for your soul, you need Christ.

the spliting into denominations was the result of the church leadership not teaching that accountability was as much for the leadership as it is for the lay people. (see the letters to TIM and Mat 18). Had the leadership been held accountable as specified, then many things that have attributed to christians (many attrocities) in general would never have happened. I think instead of running it is time to bring into the open that leaders are to be accountable not just to God but also to the Body of Christ.
One of the main doctrines of the NT is to be in one accord and so denominations are specified as a no no. Yet because as a group we are too lazy to read our scripture and act accordingly, we sit and listen to whoever will tickle our ears.

The problem with religions is that they all claim to hold THE Truth by definition. Otherwise they wouldn't be a religion. I mean, they all demand acceptance of dogma through faith, and regardless of reason. So, you cannot argue, since there is no argument. It just IS so. And this can ONLY lead to intolerance, which may be more in disguise or less virulent in some than it is in others, but religions are about intolerance. Not because I say so, but because of what they intrinsically are.

Nope. What's killing Christianity is that people are learning to think for themselves rather than be told what to think. At least that is why I left. Although it is interesting that the term Christianity is losing its meaning because it is so fragmented that there is so few characteristics that the have in common. Christianity is becoming an assortment of religions rather that being a religion in itself.

I have come to think that too much "organized religion" is not good. But I also thinks it;s the same problen in other religions too. Look at Islam, with the strife betwee the shiites and the sunnis. We can't let people like this keep us from the joy and comfort of Jesus. Keep it simple, love the lord.

As an atheist, I'm always glad when christians can see this is happening. You've just described one of the big reasons why so many of us are ticked off at christianity in general.

I do realize that not all christians are hateful like that. Unfortunately, the obnoxious and hateful ones are the ones that are easiest to see. (The same tends to be true of atheists too, unfortunately).

It's the reason I left. So many churches have forgotten Christ's message. They care more today about building multi-million dollar churches instead of helping their fellow man. They care more about bashing and deamonizing others who don't agree with them, instead of turning the other cheek.

Don't believe me? Go see "Jesus Camp" when it comes out. These people are turning their version of Christianity into the American Taliban!

I left the faith long ago because I felt the Bible could not give me the answer I was looking for... I left because there were things in there that I could not find to be true within myself. Christianity failed me, for when I called and called upon God for 6 years, I had not a single answer!!! Not one!!!!!!!!!
