My son takes Attentive Child, which I purchased at GNC. It helps him to slow down a little so he can accomplish things.

I too am diagnosed with ADHD. The speed they give people for this in medications called ritilan and that adrilin or whatever I feel are more harmful then then the diagnoses! I read over the answer thus far but it does not sound as if anyone else answering actually has this themselves? Though it does take me a while to write... I do have other medical problems and the side effect to those drugs is seizures.... My mother started me on caffeine when I was young. In some people it does the opposite. I watch what I eat. Take vitamins everyday and also am a MMJ (medical marijuana) patient. Safest treatment I found thus far. This is on the autism scale. I was diagnosed by a phyconurologist, one of my sons does have a form of autism and has a sub diagnoses of ADHD, my oldest boy is also diagnosed with ADHD. This house in entertaining at times !! More and more people who have been diagnosed are demanding safer ways of dealing with this. Not just speed and straterra which does not have speed in it (and was supposed to be safe for those with seizures and babies) has been reported to give migraine headaches and other side effects. After being on this for over a year and over $300 bucks a month for the pills, the awful side effects I quite taking it. Though I have been told I would be taking it the rest of my life. There is a lot of argument about the drugs handed out for this. I choose to do the alternative way for it has been better on my body and health all the way around.....My youngest son is not on drugs for it and my oldest now lives outside the home and he does say he is on pills to control his but he too is trying to get off of them. Try your best to get plenty of rest too. When we are going 100 miles an hour all day long it is very hard to go to sleep! Find something that works for you to slow down so you can sleep. Medical Marijuana also heps to shut my brain down long enough to sleep. Not many people understand what it is like to go go go all day long. Wish you well.....

my ten yr old daughter has adhd and i refuse to give her med.it seems like every med out there always has really bad side effects that work for a while until their body gets immuned to it then the docs want to try something else. sorry my child is not a guines pig and many of those meds are still on a trial basis. i refuse to put my kid at risk. anyway i limit her sugar intake -cut back in what juices to give --no apple juice it is the worst. i only give coke about twice a month and that is only one 12 ounce can. i tell her drink it slow -no more and keep her active like playing outside, riding bikes, when it was warmer we had the pool set up so she alos swam. little things that didn't exhaust me because i also have 2 other kids. they all have chores so they dont just sit around when it is time to come in and take showers, we rotate who does what each night so they don't get bored doing the same thing. it is not a big great change but it is enough to see the difference for me and the doc.

That is difficult with ADHD. There are a lot of different herbs that help. I couldn't tell you exactly which ones but you can look it up in the internet. I know that a childs diet had so mich to do with ADHD and ADD... make sure your son is eating healthy. Not drinking soda, limit sweets, a lot of greens, and being active. When your child eats healthy you can see a huge difference in behavior. Good Luck!!

I am 53 yrs old and I have ADD. I graduated at the top of my chemical engineering class in May 1976 at West Virginia Institute of Technology. (Look up its ratings). Artificial stimulants are based on the backbone chemical AlphaMethylPHenylEThylAMINE. Get it AMPHETAMINE. The reason for this is that ADD is the bodies inability to create or utilize the mono basic neurotransmitter dopamine. It's molecular structure is remarkably similar to amphetamine. So similar that the body can transform it INTO dopamine thereby effecting the beneficial results seen by patients on amphetamine type ADHD medications. The medicine does NOT act differently in children and adults it works the same way. The aromatic ring is hydroxylated and turned into dopamine. Any deaths related to stimulant medications for the best of my research and knowledge, have been cases of overdosage, abuse, or severe reactions to the medication. Like allegeric reactions. People die all the time by eating peanuts, should we ban peanuts and start looking for a "safer" nut. No. In my opinion, since I have ADD. as did my father, and his father, and both my children, your taking your child off a medication with very low risk factors is the same as refusing to allow your child to take insulin of he were diabetic. Shame on you and all like you. Do more research and allay your fears. Let your child have what he needs to function in our society. If you don't his life will be worse for it, and ayou, as a parent have to live with that mental burden. I pray for you .

So far there aren't any proven natural treatments for ADHD...and there's a lot of really bad information about it on the Internet, so be careful when you're searching!
The problems with Straterra don't seem to be any worse or more common than with Adderall, Ritalin, etc., so if it's doing a good job handling your son's symptoms, you may want to keep him on the drug. You'll just want to be aware of the potential side effects and watch for changes in his behavior.
You should talk to your son's doctor and share your concerns with him/her.
Good luck!

Isn't ADHD the disorder that usually only affects children from disadvantaged backgrounds, who spend their days eating crap? Forgive me if I'm wrong, but I have seen programmes on it, and it's usually a certain "type" of child that has it.
So, based on that, I'd say cut out all the artificial crap, E numbers, processed rubbish etc, feed him as much fruit and veg as he can take, and try getting him out and about exercising his body and mind.

my 7 year old daughter is extremely hyper, and she is on adderral.I really think what it is , straterra is a non stimulant, which has been known to cause violent behavior and long term side effects.Adderral is a stimulant which stimulates the chemical in the brain that is overactive and doesnt have side effects like a non stimulant.Ive tried the no medicine thing,it doesnt work for her,but from what I have studied is non pasturized food or non processed food no color dye, etc,it can get very expensive.
