"What has changed in the last five years that our Government is so inept and our people so terrified that we must do what no bomb or attack could ever do by taking away the very freedoms that define America? Why would we allow the terrorists to win by doing to ourselves what they could never do, and abandon the principles for which so many Americans today and through our history have fought and sacrificed?"

The man rocks! I've been a Leahy admirer for over 20 years. We'd be SO better off if people listened to him instead of labeling him or telling him to F off, as Cheney did.

[ADDED] Wow, just read Esheezie's answer - the guy actually drinks the Kool-Aid.

Go figure, a Liberals Senator who has a record of voting against national security tries to smear the administration before the mid-term election.

The heart of the issue is the Liberals and Democrats denial that we are war with the terrorist. Liberals and Democrats want to retreat from the issue and deny the government ability to fight terrorism.

Name one honest US Citizen that has had their constitutional rights violated...

Nicely said and very true! It is beyond me why people give up their freedoms, that cost a lot of other people their lives, so easily?

I think they have no clue as what combat is like! They have no clue how much people gave up to get the vote and freedom of speech and women the right to vote not until the 2nd term of Woodrow Wilson!

I say issue them a uniform, a weapon, a flack jacket and put them on a C17 to Iraq!! And treat them like the national guard, do it with no training!

Senator Leahy is an anti-American socialist and should be brought up on charges of sedition. There is a long precedence of Americans having to give up some civil liberties during times of war. During the Civil War, Lincoln was forced to suspend habeas corpus for a time to hold enemy combatants to the end of the war, in order to preserve the Union and defeat the slave-holding Confederacy. During World War II, Roosevelt interned hundreds of thousands of Japanese, German, and Italian immigrants because he understood that, while not all of them were bad, there were spies among them, and with that big net, he was able to catch those spies and defeat fascism. Senator Leahy and those of his ilk embolden terrorists and give them a reason to keep fighting. That reason is, maybe the liberals in the US will be able to split the American will, and they will just leave. We MUST not let that happen. It will be the end of our country, and the end of ALL civil liberties.

One possibility concerning the "fear factor:" Could it be that a generation of people who grew up in relative prosperity and artificially induced relative safety have over reacted to the presence of potential danger?
