It's interesting that you haven't seen any races other than white with Down syndrome. I've seen many children with Down syndrome who are Asian, Black, Hispanic, etc. It may just be a fluke of the population you are in. My son has Down syndrome, and while we are Caucasian, we have a large support group with people from many backgrounds....and each one is precious and beautiful!! Keep your eyes open, our lovely children are all around!!

It's probably not the area you live in...It's probably due to the fact that though hispanics have a higher rate of Down's Syndrome than caucasians, alot of them don't have health insurance or the means to go get treatment. This may also be the case for some african americans. Socioeconomic status is one of if not the largest determinant of whether or not people get the health care they need.

Here's some stats on Down's Syndrome rates for cultures: Hispanic (.12%), Caucasian (.09%), and Afro-American (.07%)

I worked with develoopmentally disabled folks for twenty years. Yes, people of all races can have Downs Syndrome. Perhaps you have not seen many that are not Caucasian because there are not a large number of other races in the area you live.

Maybe because you're only around Caucasians... I've seen Downs Syndrome children and adults from EVERY imaginable race and religious background... when I volunteered for the Special Olympics for a number of years. Leave the recluse confines of all-Caucasian atmosphere and environment, and join the real world... there are other people that inhabit this world, too... and they, too, have the same afflictions as Caucasians; open your eyes and you'll see others.

one of the most common genetic birth defects. It affects all races and economic levels equally. Approximately 1 in 800 to 1 in 1,000 babies are born with the disorder. Life expectancy among adults with Down syndrome is about 55 years, though this varies.

I have worked in the medical field for many years and down syndrome knows no race, creed or religion I have seen it in all, mostly comes from high risk pregnancies in older people. You can always research it on some of the medical sites. Peace!

Do you work in an area that serves a larger white population? Or an area with a large population of people other than caucastion, but are in "poor" standing and without insurance to see a mental health professional.

I used to work with an African American that had down syndrome. It's such a sad thing to see, no matter what the race is.

Have you thought that may be you are in a predominantly white area, secondly i rarely see other races with that condition i don't know why either. But i will say that i have seen a few black people with downs syndrome before.

I don't know about race...I do know that around 80% of babies born with Down's are born to mothers over 35. Something like that...
Are you in Grand Rapids, Michigan?

me too...by the way.
