Retirement usually means that it was the choice of the person to retire. If the company fired him, technically, he should say "I was fired".
But we sometimes don't actually mean the words we say. He could have been sarcastic or stretched the truth to make it sound it was his choice to stop working.

"I'm retired" means the person decided to not work and to receive a pension of some kind. Sometimes, a company will ask a person to "decide" to retire so that they don't have to fire him, but that is when they have some big, usually legal, problem with him and if he retires, it spares everybody a lot of grief.
But the "I'm retired" phrase always means just that - I don't work anymore, I live on a pension. Or, hey, maybe I won the lottery! lol.

It means that they can't take any more years on their job...When you are fired, it means that the boss did not like the way they worked or they just found someone better! Sometimes, when you retire, you take off the rest of your life with no job or just work part-time. When you retire, you get a social-security check every month to help pay for everything you need for the rest of your life. Maybe when you grow up, you can spend all of your time at the beach!! lol x3

In most cases it means he has put in the required time set by the company to separate. It can also mean layoff or on his own accord. I guess you can retire after you get fired but I don't see it used this way.

Why don't you ask them? When I retired they told me it was a termination. It was my decision, and I have a pension and benefits. If he was fired or retired there may be evidence to support that. No evidence either way means that it doesn't matter.

I'm retired, means he retired and doesn't need to work.
I'm fired, means the company got rid of him.
I quit, means he quit working for the company prematurely.
I'm laid off means the company doesn't need him right now.

Usually means that they have left their profession of their own choice or reached an age of mandatory retirement.
Could also mean they have gone to bed.
