When water freezes, chemical impurities can get pushed to the surface. then when your frost free refrigerator goes through the cycle, this stuff crystallizes out.

Most chemicals are less dissoluble as the temperature gets lower.

Sometimes mold can build up inside your ice maker. This mold is usually yellow or black. 9 times out of 10, it's harmless. With that said, it's still not satisfying to look at. You should only use ice makers that come with a filter that can be changed from time to time. This would solve your problem. Especially if you plan on using that ice when guests are around.

Unclean areas with water and no proper protection will grow an algea called Mustard Algea because of it's yellow color. You can get rid of it by running a solution of water and bleach (10% Chlorine Bleach is plenty) and then rinsing the area until the scent of the Chlorine is gone (or mostly gone).

Mustard algea is a problem in swimming pools which can be alleviated with Chlorine and Copper Algeacide. There is a chance that your ice maker has the same problem.
