I definitly think public schools are better! I can't imagine being home all day and like you said, not socializing. If you think about it, most of your friends are in your school. And it would get lonely not having anyone to talk to or meeting new people. Also, when you get out in the real world, you'll know how to react to different people with different personalities. So I think public schools are a lot better then homeschooling.

Homeschooling. I have homeschooled for 7 years and my children are better socialized in the right way than most public school children I've met. My two oldest sons went back into public school in high school and were very popular right off the bat. I think it's because they are original and they know how to think for themselves. Homeschoolers have so many opportunities to socialize it's hard to get time to do school if you're not careful. My middle son came back home to homeschool because he couldn't get Japanese in his public school. All they offered was Spanish and he had no interest in it. He had to take an elective in sports retailing, which he has no interest in. At home he takes guitar, which he loves. He gets his school done, then he goes out with his friends from school. He has the best of both worlds.

I have seen both sides of this coin. I myself would say that they both have wonderful things to offer. We actually considered home schooing our children for a second. However; homeschooling (although there are programs now to help kids interact) still doesn't teach very good social skills. A lot of the people I know that were home schooled lacked basic communication and interpersonal skills that you need in day to day life. But in the cases of kids who are being severely bullied, have parents who can't drive or are really far from the schools (no bussing), or are just having a hard time focusing in a classroom environment; I would think this might work for them. Each family has to make their own decision. Some parents just feel that they want to be the ones to teach their children (whether it be religious or personal in nature).

Public schooling teaches children a sense of 'community' and a great deal of social skills. They learn to find their 'niche' so to speak and fit in with others. Some of the downside is a lot of the school shootings, worrying about psychopaths coming into the school, bullying, peer pressure, etc.

Like everyone else said, there are pluses and minuses no matter what your friend chooses. You should support her in her choice and try to keep her in on things that are going on and still hang out. This way she still has that connection and doesn't feel totally alienated. She may just feel more comfortable doing things from at home in her jammies. Maybe she felt like she was being called out on something or pestered. Perhaps her parents have influenced her decision. Talking to her is probably going to be the best way to find out. =) This usually applies to almost everything in life.

Public school is way better! Besides the fact that the level of education is better, studies have shown that the constant interaction with other students and adults is just as crucial for developing into an adult. Not to mention that colleges have a very very hard time accepting homeschooled students because they have nothing to base their judgements off of.

Both types of schooling have the good and bad sides. You have no control over the social climate in a public school. On the other hand the public schools have more to offer in the way of field trips etc. it is a toss up really.

my husband and i were just talking about this an hour ago because of a school shooting in Wisconsin where we live, and we have two young sons... anyways, the social aspect is greater if they go to a public school, they have more friends, are in clubs and events, and might be better at getting a high profile job in the future because they are around different types of people in school and know how to deal with them. Education wise, I know of a lot of home schooled children that are incredibly smart, they learn at their own pace, learn things more interesting to them , and are in smaller groups so they get more attention and help when they need it.

Public. Homeschool is an option or a last resort for people living in the wilderness.

for one way homeschooling is better because you don't get distracted by anything and you become really smart, but public because you have freedom to explore the world and have fun, ... so i think its a hard choice

It depends on the situation. However, unless the parents have extensive training in multiple fields, they are probably not qualified to teach all of the courses in which students are expected to gain proficiency, i.e. physics, chemistry, composition, geometry, calculus, foreign language, technology, trigonometry, etc., etc.
