It depends on your dog's age. Puppy food is higher in fat and made for growing dogs. Senior food has more vitamins and minerals in them to keep your dog healthy in old age, and adult food is in-between. When looking at dog foods, I suggest looking at the ingredient list and avoiding any foods that contain corn, which is a common filler for dog foods and often causes allergies. I would also try to find a food that doesn't contain by-products. Some foods that I would recommend are Natural Choice, Premium Edge, Nutro, and Chicken Soup for the Dog Lover's Soul.

Many foods that people think are great, like Hills Science Diet, Eukanuba, Iams, Purina, or Kibbles and Bits, are actually quite bad for your pet, as they contain all sorts of by-products as well as a hefty amount of corn.

Remember, ingredients are listed by what makes up the highest percentage of the food, so if corn is the first one, the food probably isn't that great for your dog. So start reading ingredient lists and you'll find the perfect food! =)

Innova, California Natural, and Merrick are great foods. They have very few ingredients, and their main ingredient is meat, NOT meat by products. As one of the other people mentioned, you want a food that's main ingredient is meat, not corn or by products. They also use natural preservatives. With many store brands, they use artificial preservatives that can turn rancid if the food sits in the store too long. This is why some dogs will get half way through a bag of food and stop eating. Natural preservatives help the food to last longer without turning rancid. The brands I mentioned aren't as common, but they are really great quality. You'll pay more, but you'll also feed less since it's better quality.

An excellent dry food that is moderately priced is Diamond "Naturals" Lamb and Rice. They make many dog foods, but their "Naturals" are as good as most premium priced specialty foods. You can't find it at the grocery store. Look in Pet Stores or if you live near the country look in the feed stores that farmers use. It is about 75 cents per pound in the large bags.

EDIT: go to www.whole-dog-journal.com they put out a monthly journal on help for dogs. you can order their guide on dog food for about $6 that will help you a bunch.

Actually there are a lot of good foods out there for dogs. It depends on how much you are willing to spend. I started my male beagle out on Iams. He did well on Iams, but it gets costly. I weened him onto the Purina Dog Chow and his coat is just as shiny, he is just as active and just as healthy. The only difference I have actually seen is in my wallet. Just stick with the major brands. Don't go generic as you don't know what they actually put in there as dog food is not as strictly regulated as people food.

I think the best dog food is Eukanuba. I have a Malti-Poo (a mix breed of Maltese and Poodle) and his white hair is always shiny and vibrant. Just like his demeanor. He's the happiest dog in the world and his appearance shows it too.
Hope it works out for you too.

I feed my dogs Flint River Ranch dog food all natural no preservative and they love it. It is very expensive but well worth it. Coats nice and shiny, no dry skin. I would highly recommend it to anyone.

I've fed my dog Iams, Pedigree, you name it. All the "premium" brands. He would finally eat it when he was starved. We changed to Purina Beneful and when we get up and head to where his food is he is bouncing and jumping on the furniture and watching us every step of the way. He loves his food.

Always read labels. Most pet food is horrible; dead cows, cancerous meat, etc. So, go natural. Go to Petco and see the offerings there, remember read the label and go with the healthiest you can find.
