#1 those lactaid pills can make you feel WiErD. Made me ill-dizzy. Do not try them.
#2 Sometimes milk intolerance has nothing to do with eating cheese, yogurt etc.
#3 A milk allergy can also cause major bloating, gas and cramping.
Take it from someone who is almost 31 and deals with it. I am a major ice cream addict along with orange cheddar cheese (not together of course). I can eat them in moderation. But give me 2 glasses of milk and I am bowled over.
As for whether you should continue, I doubt it, it can only exacerbate the allergy, not get rid of it. You should see an allergist about it. Though the lactaid pills are never entering my body again, the lactaid milk is fine. Give it a try, the whole one, it may not be a bad idea. Besides it is fairly cheap and your Mom will have to get it if you need it. It is a source of calcium everyone needs.

Lactose intolerance is due to the absense of a bacteria in the digestive system which is necessary to breakdown milk. This bacteria is usually numerous in babies and young children but as we age we drink less milk and the bacteria have a difficult time maintaining a large enough concentration to do the job. Most adults have none of the bacteria by age 40 or so.
You can buy products over the counter that temporarily replaces the bacteria and so can drink milk, or eat ice cream, my favorite.

As another poster mentioned, if you can eat cheese/yogurt/etc without problems, you may not be lactose intolerant. The amount of milk the body can tolerate varies from person to person; you may be able to consume 8oz without serious problems. ("Serious problems" include diarrhea and gas.)
Don't feel bad: the majority of the population of the world is lactose-intolerant. Only a minority (mostly of European-decent) have, quite recently in fact, developed the ability to digest milk-products. The problem is that the adult stomach lacks the enzyme to properly digest milk.
Regardless (whether you are lactose intolerant or not), milk is *not* a necessary part of a healthy diet (in fact, the saturated fat from milk products may offset the benefit of the calcium received). All advertising aside, after infancy you can certainly omit milk-products from your diet altogether; and as for the body's calcium requirements consume other calcium-rich foods such as broccoli, tofu, beans, etc; or calcium-fortified soy milk, orange juice, etc.

well i also have questions for you. Do you eat cheese or any other kinda of dairy like yogurt? If you can eat either of theese without feeling like you do when you drink milk then you probally arent lactose intolerant. But if you eat pizza or yogurt and things and feel the same then yes you could be intolerant.

Lactaid doesn't cost THAT much more than regular milk. Just ask her ... especially if it would avoid a trip to the doctor.
Don't drink regular milk if it makes you uncomfortable.
Do other dairy products bother you? Cheese, ice cream, butter?
