Seriously. If you think the immaculate conception refers to JESUS's birth, you are deeply mistaken.

So can anyone explain why so many are confused on this fact?

Yes, Ryan G. I know that. The question was why so many people seem to think it refers to Jesus's conception & birth.

Amanda: the opening blurb is---

-------------
This article refers to the dogma of the immaculate conception of Mary, Mother of Jesus. For the doctrine of the virginal conception of Jesus Christ, see Incarnation (Christianity) and Virgin Birth (Christian doctrine).
-------

In short, Jesus was not the immaculate conception, MARY was.

The Immaculate conception was about Mary's conception in her mother's womb. The mother of God could not be born with original sin.

The reason is that many protestants (not all, but some on the farther side away from Catholicism) tend to focus to much on Jesus, and not the entire story. Does the story of David and Goliath have any less clout? It's in the Bible, so is the suggestion that Mary was born without sin.

Your point is well taken, since the whole concept of "immaculate conception", that is birth without sin, is a Catholic teaching alone when it refers to Mary. The rest of the Christian world believes that only Jesus was born without sin, so when they hear the term, they assume that the phrase applies to Jesus.

The Immaculate Conception is a misconception of the Catholic Church. According to their belief, Mary was born without original sin, that's how she was able to give birth to Jesus without sin. But if you follow that reasoning, than Mary's mother Ann would have to been born without sin in order that Mary have no sin. And Ann's mother, and her mother, and so forth. All would have to be born without sin in order to give birth to their sinless child. So that theory soon losses credibility.

The Bible consist of many Authors and like playing Telephone , the stories have been altered to accommodate the different man made religions. I believe The Bible is meant to give morals, Not to be taken too literal. I believe we are to look into ourselves (the temple ) to try to connect with the Most High (God) and try to live with LOVE and without regret. I believe Jesus came to give us to give hope and that we are all connected in LOVE and therefore should live without condemning others for their color, race, beliefs, or sexual preferences. Man has a lot to do with how the world is today. Most of us have disconnected from the true meaning of living (it s a Gift) and are hypocritical to say otherwise. I am now learning that God is everything and everywhere and Jesus is The Son and we will see Him in the afterlife. I m also learning to meditate to make the connection to The Most High and learn to live without worry, learn to love myself and others (as we re all connected), not care what others say, and find my peace. Bless all of you. I pray you each find your own Peace ;)

i took my answer from the bible...About two thousand years ago, Jesus Christ was born of the virgin Mary.Luke 1:27,31,32 ...The virgin's name was Mary...you will conceive in your womb and bring forth a Son, and shall call His name Jesus. He will be great, and will be called the Son of the Highest ...

WOW, you were there?

This is how my (religious) Father explained it to me. Maybe Mary was not a virgin but she knew what was inside of her was the real deal. It may have been immaculate or it may not have been, but there's not doubt that it was Jesus. There was no doubt in Mary's eyes or the Jew's (never understood that one) eye's, nor in his disciples eyes...ETC...

Mary was a virgin in gods eyes.

Taking the bible literally was your first mistake.

First off, Wikipedia is not the ultimate source. Anyone can write an article for them. Second, read the little thing at the beginning of the article. You need to do a little more research! lol

It actually only confused me more. The article seemed to be nothing more than spin doctoring to prove a point. None of us were there at the time. Nobody witnessed her having any sort of encounter with God, Himself. I suppose if and when you get to Heaven you can ask Him if he did the deed or not. I do not think I would be real quick to ask a question of that nature to His face.

Catholic misconception. Because they had a FALSE BELIEF that people were born guilty of sin (See Ezekiel 18) they had to create some bogus way for Jesus to be born without that guilt.

The entire belief is completely false. "Original sin" is NOT BIBLICAL!

Ezekiel 18 CLEARLY teaches against the idea that guilt of any sin is passed to a child. If NO GUILT is passed, then certainly none is passed from several hundred generations of mankind.

Ezekiel 18:1 A message came to me from the LORD. He said, 2 “You people have a proverb about the land of Israel. What do you mean by it? It says, “‘The parents eat sour grapes. But the children have a bitter taste in their mouths.’
3 “You will not use that proverb in Israel anymore,” announces the LORD and King. “And that is just as sure as I am alive. 4 Everyone belongs to me. Father and son alike belong to me. People will die because of their own sins.
5 “Suppose a godly man does what is fair and right...9...You can be sure he will live,” announces the LORD and King.
10 “But suppose he has a mean son who harms other people. The son commits murder. Or he does some other things that are wrong. 11 Suppose he does those things even though his father never did....Will a man like that live? He will not! You can be sure he will be put to death. And what happens to him will be his own fault. He did many things I hate.
...17 He keeps himself from committing sins.
He does not lend money and charge too much interest.
He keeps my laws and follows my rules.
He will not die because of his father’s sin. You can be sure he will live. 18 But his father will die because of his own sin. He got rich by cheating others. He robbed his relatives. He also did what was wrong among his people.

19 “But you still ask, ‘Is the son guilty along with his father?’ No! The son did what was fair and right. He was careful to keep all of my rules. So you can be sure he will live. 20 People will die because of their own sins. The son will not be guilty because of what his father did. And the father will not be guilty because of what his son did. The right things a godly person does will be added to his account. The wrong things a sinful person does will be charged against him.
21 “But suppose a sinful person turns away from all of the sins he has committed. And he keeps all my rules. He does what is fair and right. Then you can be sure he will live. He will not die. 22 None of the sins he has committed will be held against him. Because of the godly things he has done, he will live.
23 “When sinful people die, it does not give me any joy,” announces the LORD and King. “But when they turn away from their sins and live, that makes me very happy.

I have excerpted several sections of the prophecy. Read the entire chapter and you will see it is not out of context. The scripture presents a hypothetical case where a family has alternating good and bad sons. God clearly teaches us that children are not charged with their parent's sins.
