I am an atheist! If soccer is the new religion then I am an even more dedicated atheist!
But you have a very valid point some people do actually worship football and football players!
They have little shrines in their homes to pray for them and to worship them, it really is unbelievable! The whole scene is also the same as religion in that it eventually leads to violence, yes the more I think about it the more I am convinced!
What shall we call it? 'The Holy Balls'?
We can even imagine exactly what the followers would expect in their idea of heaven!

my husband once said football was his religion, he came back to God shortly after that. Football is harmless as long as it doesn't come first in your life.
