You're basically seeing previous images of what has happened before involving light and how you respond to it. Sit out in the sun (eyes closed and you see a red/orange image inside of your eyelids.On a dark day at night in pitch dark, close your eyes and you see black, but when you open them you see all the same lines and "patterns" as you did before. Its just your reaction to light (sometimes sound is involved, but thats pretty rare!)
