The class is Introduction to Mental Retardation, I have to do a 6 page report on any disability of my choice, and I can't decide. I was wondering if anyone has some suggestions.

I need developmental disorders, some people are suggesting psychological disorders.
Bipolar disorder and schitzophrenia are psychological disorders and are not connected. They are totally different disorders.

What about Cerebral Palsy?

It's an interesting case because you can be born with it or develop it later. You can also get around the disability through physical therapy and medication. I used to have classes at uni with a student who had cerebral palsy. There were actually a few of these students at my uni, one was studying sociology, one was doing biomedical science, and another was doing history. They were all in wheelchairs and some needed to type into a thing that talked, in order communicate.

Certainly a good example of a developmental disability that can affect the body but not the rational mind.... Which differs greatly from what people thought about Cerebral Palsy 10 or 20 years ago.

First of all, autism is not mental retardation as one answer suggested. Autism is a developmental disability and is a communication disorder. My son is Aspergers(high-functioning autism)and he has trouble with social cues and some social skills. Aspergers would be an excellent disability for you as it has been a long time coming since it was recognised in the United States. Schools are reluctant to diagnose it. Most doctors don't even know what it is. It has been a real struggle for my son. I'm not saying it isn't a struggle for other disabilities.

Why don't you try doing the report on Agoraphobia. It was the first long report I had to do in front of the class and I had so many questions coming my way after I read the report that I couldn't believe it. Agoraphobia is the fear of going outside. Some people stay in their homes for years without going out. Study up on it on the net. It is really interesting and you can get six pages out of it easily. It is a really disabling disease that literally keeps people confined for sometimes years and years. I knew a lady personally that stayed in her home for thirty some years. It took her years of baby steps before she could get out of her home. Try looking it up you may find it very interesting. Good Luck on that A.

I'd tell you autism...since I have an autistic child and find him fascinating, but that's pretty popular these days since 1 in 166 kids are being diagnosed with it. Maybe Fragile X Syndrome. These kids have autistic tendencies, but (unlike many autistics) have IQ's under 70.

Autism is a form of mental retardation and due to the significant rise in the number of cases in the past year, they think there could be environmental causes. It has really come up in the news and public awareness lately.

Examples of genetic conditions are Down syndrome, fragile X syndrome, and phenylketonuria (PKU).
