I was told by teachers and a police officer at my school that I could get arrested for hugging a 13 year old girl in school. I will be 18 in a couple of months and she will be 14 in a couple of months. I wanted to date her but I was told I could get arrested for it. They told me just to be friends with her. I dont want to be just friends. I know that she dated a 17 year old earlier in the year. What should I do and what can I be arrested for?

Remember that 13 = 30. Dating a 13 year old girl can get you 30 years in jail. That's way they are call jail-bait.

Many states include in their penal code a so-called "Romeo exception. This exception deals with situations in which a young adult above the age of consent (you) performs a sexual activity with a someone under the age of consent (13 year old girl); it exempts the young adult from being charged with a sex offense if the adult's age is within three years of the minor's age, and the adult did not use force or coercion on the minor. You are more then 3 year older so if you keep sexual contact with her you will be arrested and charge with sexual abuse of the minor or similar statue in your state.

Dating her isnt the crime, Sexual Intercourse is the crime, and techinically, yes, you could get into loads of trouble if her parents were very unhappy with it. There are different laws in different states for the age limitations. Some states have the legal age of consent at 15-16, others at 18. I dont know the precise laws, but I as I understand it, some of them have laws where it is illegal to have intercourse with someone more than 2 years younger than you, and some have laws where its more than 3 years younger than you. If you date her, Just keep it simple and dont take advantage of her. 13/14 is much to young for sexual activitys, you are putting you and her at risk for a lot of things when going that path, such as unwanted pregnancy. It IS possible to date without having to have sex at that age...

you can only be arrested if she or her parents press charges. I say go on and date her if she likes you too. I see no problem with that at all, The age difference is not that big. It just show you are a real man. I was in the same situation.

You can get arrested. Most likely it would be statatory rape. You may like her but its not worth the trouble you can get into. The parents can charge you or even the state. Watch out!

Do it secretly? Four year's difference is modest by my standards. I've a guy who's old enough to me my grandfather.

I think even if they caugth you, there's a grace thing for partners 6 years or less apart. I read it somewhere on wikipedia. You'll have to look it up...

Don't push the law on this one. You need to understand that you will be an adult and she will be a minor in the eyes of the law. Surely you can cast your affections on someone of a more appropriate age.

As soon as you touch her, you could be arrested. Unfortunately there isn't much you can do about it unless maybe you get permission from her parents.
