Here's a picture of how to hold the violin:http://www.8notes.com/cello_sheet_music.asp
When you hold the violin, you need to tilt the violin slightly to the right. Be sure to center your arm under the violin. Place your chin and part of your cheek on the chinrest. If you have full cheeks, place more of your cheek than your chin on the chinrest. Don't allow your elbow to touch your side. Don't let your wrist touch the violin. Keep your hand open and fingers curved. Your wrist should be bent backwards like a claw. Place your thumb underneath the neck of the violin and keep your knuckle flat.
To hold the bow: Place thumb in the space at the bottom (the frog,) of the bow. Bend your thumb knuckle out so that it touches or almost touches the bow hair. Curl your first finger around the bow so that the bow is cradled in your first knuckle. It should be placed on to of where the two wrappings meet. Place the 2 middle fingers over the dot on the frog. The tip of pinky goes on top of the bow with the knuckle bent out. Make sure your hand hangs from the wrist and your elbow points.
How the violin sounds depends upon how good the player is, how nice the violin and bow are, what kind of strings you have on your violin and what kind of rosin you use on the bow. The violin sounds pretty good when I play it because I have been playing for a long time. Beginners usually don't sound very good, but they don't care because they are just happy to be playing, and if they keep practicing, pretty soon they will sound good.

you put the small black are on the bottom under your chin (the chin rest) you hold the other end of the viola up with your left hand holding from underneath the highest part of the area with the strings. It high pitched and depending on how you play can sound like a dying cat or... i'm not sure how to describe it..but a beautiful round sound...kinda like a sustained bell i guess

Tuck it under your chin. Draw the bow across the strings smoothly, without changing the angle of the bow relative to the ground, so much.

If you play it "just so" it can sound like someone strangling a cat.
