So my husband (who is in training to be an MP) has recieved orders to Ft. Drum.. and I would like to know some information about it. I was in the Air Force myself active duty for A.G.E and want to go reserves since I've been seperated...would this be possible? I would also like to go to a University or College (no community college...) is there any close by?? How about Malls too? How is the base? Housing? etc.. Thank you!!!

I was an Army MP for 31/2 years, so tell the Hubby to enjoy it! Fort Drum, NY is cold during the winter, mild in the spring, and around 80 in the Summer. Autumn is the prettiest time of the year there witht he leaves changing. There are several reserve units in central New York, I would suggest contacting a recruiter in Rome, NY, and they will link you to a recruiter on Fort Drum. There are several great Colleges in NY: Syracuse University, and Cornell are probably the closest non-State schools. If the idea of a commut is too much for you, go to the Army Education 'Center on Drum and ask them about your options. They will also give you information about financial aid for military dependants and veterans. Drum is a military town. Yes, there is a Mall. But don't get to upset when you get there and it seems a wee bit desolate, just realize that Syracuse, Toronto, and Albany are all within a days drive.
As for the deployment thing, here's the deal. Fort Drum is a Unit of Action (UOA) which means that they are constantly in the rotation for deployment. Your husband should know that as an MP the average deployment will be for 12 months and it will happen every other year. Currently, Drum has units in Iraq and Afghanistan. After his first deployment as an MP, he can request duties such as desk sergeant, military police investigator, or traffic that will keep him stateside for a year. He will need to keep his PT score up, complete correspondence courses and attend at least one board before he applies for those positions.
I think it is awesome that you are moving to my home state. Please email me if you have any more questions about MP life, or NY state, or even if you just want to chat. :) Good luck!

I hate this damn place, its just not my scene. Here at drum we live amongst the Amish folk. Watertown is old and dirty...not many stores at all...
Drum is a big disappointment. I guess I just thought that there would be more to do around here seeing as though we are home to the 10th mountain.
Anyways overall this place is fu cking BLAH!!!

Oh and to answer your question about deployments YES they do deploy all the time....Every other year....gone for a year back for a year.
