Permed hair has a tendancy to dry out, as the chemicals in perms strip away our hair's natural essential fatty acids.

However, with the proper shampoos, conditioners and products, permed hair can be just as smooth and beautiful as naturally curly hair. It is very important, however, that you consult your professional hair dresser to determine the appropriate products for your hair type.

Here are some helpful tips about taking care of permed hair by hair expert Bruce Jordan. Following these will help your permed hair to stay sleek and stylish and not poofy and dried out:

1. However tempted you might be don't wash newly permed hair for at least 48 hours after processing. If you have a special occasion coming up try to have your perm done a few weeks before so that you're comfortable about managing it.

2. Always use perm-friendly shampoos and conditioners like \ to prolong the life of your curls. (Fructis is a popular one).

3. After washing, detangle very gently with a smooth-ended wide tooth comb while your conditioner is on. Never, never brush wet hair, especially permed hair.

4. Wrap hair VERY LOOSELY in a towel to remove excess water before styling but DO NOT RUB.

5. If possible, leave hair to dry naturally for a while (indoors) then finish using a diffuser attachment. Tipping head upside down while drying will gift lift at the roots.

If you have chosen spirals or ringlets don't disturb too much with your fingers while drying. If you want softer more subtle curls or waves, tease your fingers very gently through hair during the last stages of drying.

6. If curls start to frizz during drying, gently work in some taming serum and continue on a really low setting.

7. Useleave-in conditioner after shampooing. Also when your hair is styled, put a small dab on your hands and rub it into the ends of your hair.

Rememeber, nothing can repair a hair perm once it's damaged as a result of chemical use. The ends would need to be trimmed regularly 3-4 weeks.

Hope this helps,

my sister got a perm (they last about a year) and if she brushed it then it would turn poofy and her hair looks funny when it's poofy (or maby it's cause it's like a yard long from her neck.) so i sugest that if you do get a perm then you COMB it!

At nighttime, I advise you place your hair in a doobie, spray it with oil sheen, and tie it up with a silk headband(a pair of tights additionally helps). Use a super teeth comb instead of small. if your hair is in a fro now, straighten it with a flat iron and in no way use it no extra desirable than two times a week. putting your hair in a doobie often keeps hair immediately already.

depends on the length.
tons of my friends have gotten perms and their's are REALLY cute.
but they told me not to get it because it dries out your hair....so take that into perspective.

my hairdresser also told me never to make him perm my hair ....he said it completely screws it up. just a tip ;-)

If you let your hair air dry after you "pick" the tangles out, then only use a big tooth comb or a pick after it's dry, it will maintain more curl and poof less.

it depends on how sensitive your hair is to stong chemicals and how long your hair is. My aunt gets them and it looks best with shoulder lenghth hair.
