I have deleted files that I have downloaded to my desktop, but suddenly they have shown up again. They take up no memory, but they are like ghosts of the past that come back to haunt me. I can't delete or move them because it keeps on saying cannot read file from source or disc when their is no disc and they shouldn't be there because I deleted them. Anyone please help me.

You can be infected with some kind of Malware

Anyway if you can't delete a file its because, either it is in use by your OS ( wich is likely to happen if you have some kind of trojan installed on your system ) or you have invalid references to that file

For the First option try a full virus scan in Safe Mode (Push F8 when you boot your computer if your using Windows) and possibly run Ad-Aware, and try to delete the files

For the Second option download http://www.purgeie.com/dl/divfinst.exe

that will delete your file

something to try: right clk a file and clk Properties.
UNcheck the box at the bottom saying Read Only.
Now, left clk on the file to hi-lite it, then hold Shift down and press the Delete key.
Good luck.

I has a similar problem. I copied a folder to my external hard drive then deleted it from my computer C drive. After that, everytime I turned on the external drive the folder would show up again in my C drive. I suspect maybe it made an entry in the registery? After weeks of this happening and deleteting it many many times it finially stayed deleted! That is a FM file. (Funkin Magic)

Based on my previous experience and job status, I'd personally think that you may have some sort of spyware/adware running within your system. Adware/spyware is known to do such things such as
- Add unkown items into your favorites
- Adjust your PC desktop
- Slow down the performance of your computer
- Change settings you personally did not adjust.

I'd suggest you visit http://www.download.com and check out some SpyWare/AdWare removal software's. Most of them are either ShareWare (Free trial) or freeware (100% free). Personally, I'd recommend Edwido. It's completely free and most efficent.

After you run the scan and it turns up nothing wrong with your computer, contact your computer provider's customer care department. Good luck!
