I'm in a student group at my school, just started a month ago. And this guy in it invited everyone in the group to his house for a birthday thing tomorrow night. I've only seen him about 5 times in my life and don't know if this is a situation where I'd get him a gift or not. I don't know what everyone else is doing, so I'm asking here what you people think I should do...what would make me NOT look like a total loser. PS. I'm a guy, this isn't a romantic question or something. PPS. Thanks for your help.

you could go in with another student who knows him better in buying him a gift or card ...that way #1 you can see if anyone else is planning on buying him a gift or card and #2 i bet whoever you choose to go in with will appreciate the help with the costs

This may sound weird but what age group is this? If we're talking like pre-16 for a guy, I would think yeah, get him something. Older than that and no.
Were there actual invitations issued or word of mouth? Real invitation - yes, get a gift.
What I'd do is pick up a gift card to a play you think interests him (BestBuy, Barnes & Noble) and a card. Wear a jacket and keep the gift card and card in your jacket pocket. If you see other gifts, sure give it to him. If not, make a game time decision. If you can play it off, be cool about it saying like 'hey, I wasn't sure if people were getting gifts but thought you could use this anyway.'
If you're not comfortable because you're not seeing gifts, just keep the gift card for yourself!

Okay - Since you're a guy going to a guy's house for his birthday and you don't know him too well then I don't think you need to bring a b-day gift but you should bring something.
I'm not sure how old you are so if you are old enough to drink, bring a wine. Otherwise, bring dessert. A manly dessert like apple pie or fudge brownies.

Ok, in all seriousness, if a guy I just met, or didn't know to well, was to invite me to a birthday gig or whatnot, I would ask him what I can bring..be it a case of soda, chips, a cd, along those lines...If you know what type of music he likes you could always burn him a cd of music...doesn't cost you anything except a tad bit of time and the cost of the cd...or heck depending on your and his soon to be age...maybe he just wants his friends to come and have a good time and isn't looking for any type of gift and your presence is enough

If you are of age, bring some beer to share (then EVERYONE will love you ;) ) Otherwise... the gift card idea is the best - get like $10 at Best Buy, if there is a gift pile - donate it - if not, keep it and spend it yourself later :)
Have fun!

Everybody wants to receive a gift on their birthday. Since you don't know him very well a birthday card with some scratch-off lottery tickets would be a nice gesture.

I would get him a "funny" card, and maybe pick up the tab if y'all decide to go out for the evening. By all means do not give him a serious card since this is a new relationship for you.

If you feel like it. If you don't really feel like it but dont want other people to think you are rude, buy him a gift card.
