I am soon buying new sets of dinnerware and drinkware. Should I get sets of 8 or 12? My family is composed of my husband, myself, and our 16 months old son, and we dont entertain very often.

Are you purchasing very expensive items? Investing in settings for twelve will carry you in good stead for many years (unless it's Melmac, there will be breakage) and you can always pass it on to the next generation. How big is your extended family? Lots of things to consider, but I suggest service for 8 in a moderate price range; don't break the bank......your taste may change sooner than you think.

Hi,

Would you see your family growing in the next few years? I've had my set of Corelle for about 10 years, it will last forever!! Think about your future and decide from there. We have a set for 12, but i also have an extended family that includes 9 others. A set for 8 probably would fit your needs at this point...you could always buy more later on too.

get the 8. Eventually you will be very tired of the pattern and want something new. Trust me, even with large family, a set of 12 lasts a long--long--time. Definitely for dinnerware. If you're super clumsy it might be worth getting the set of 12 in the glassware.!

I would go with a service for 12. I made the mistake of getting a service for 8 when I was first married and my pattern was discontinued and now I need a service for 12 because my family has grown. Its better to have too many than too few. I have a search EBay constantly to try and dig up extra pieces of my china and that is just a big pain in the neck!

do you and your hubby come from big families? I would think about a 12 piece set, cause if you don't do your dishes after every meal, you have enough for the next one. I personally have a set of 20, because hubby is in the military and we have guests over at any moment.

make sure you get 'jr' a couple of plastic plates and cups too, and put them in a drawer just for him, helps not get your stuff and his stuff mixed up and he gets to feel special cause he is the only one that can use them.

think about holidays too, if you are going to have family over, or close friends, you want to be able to give a salad, dinner, and dessert.

Since you do not entertain often, I would buy a set of 8, and save some money, too.

8, because if it is dinner ware and drink ware u would want about 5 to 8 because when u have parties, u want to give the, paper plates because they could break ur dishes, unless it is like only 2 to 4 ppl, just a chit chat party then u can use the dishes

Always get set for 12. That way u will have enough on hand when company comes. It is better than serving paper plates....

i would go for 8 if you don't have many people over. however, if it is a limited pattern, i would get 12. you never know if you may need more because of family growth or breakage.
