Sometimes the direct approach is best, just ask. But if that seems too bold for your liking, look for the following signs. Pay attention to your conversations with the person in question.
1) Does this person show a special interest in having a conversation with you and, once started, make an effort to keep that conversation going?
2) Has this person taken a sudden interest in your life and hobbies? This is a sure sign that he or she is interested in something.
3) Other elements of body language include frequent eye contact, holding your gaze and looking down before looking away.
4) Does the person you're wondering about just plain smile at you a lot?
Just remember, take each moment like it will be the last. This I feel will be a good start for you in knowing. Good Luck!!!!!!!

I think you're putting way too much thought into this. Right now, it seems that he's just trying to make conversation, not a commitment. So, there's no need to start thinking way too ahead of yourself about some imaginary rumors that MIGHT start flying or anyone thinking that you're desperate.
Just relax and make conversation back. There's a long distance between the start and the finish line, so...why start running before you even walk? Slow your pace, and just make friends. All good things always start on the foundation of friendship anyhow. So, right now ...just think of him as exactly what he is- the nice guy who sits next to you!

Well be friendly. He might like u if he keeps comming to u. Best would be to go with the flow. U ask him similar questions too. Ask him what he is having for lunch. Ask him if he'd like to have lunch with u and ur friends. If he agrees and comes over but no friends, tell him they couldnt make it.

First, and let's get this out of the way quickly, he likes you. But to be sure, just go up to him and start asking him about things he is interested in, what he likes to do in his spare time, etc. - you'll find out pretty quick if he is truly interested in you or not.
Exploringly,

Why not just ask him out and see what he says? That is the only way that you are going to find out. You wouldn't sound desperate for simply asking him out -- unless you sound too excited or too nervous.

The only way to find out is by telling him or you can wait till he asks you out if you think that he likes you.

just keep making small talk with him and eventually he'll probably start asking some personal questions if he's interested in you
