It really depends on the resolution, compression settings, etc. but here's a link that you may find useful.

Put the card in your camera and see how many frames it says you can still hold on the card. That's the only really accurate way. Well, even that is an approximation, because the camera does not know how large your next picture will be. It's like your car predicting how many miles of fuel you have remaining in the tank when it doesn't know if you are about to smach the gas pedal to the floor. For instance, if you take a picture with a lot of more-or-less uniform sky in it, the memory used for a full 5 MP picture will be considerably lower than a 5 MP picture with huge amounts of detail.
If you are thinking of buying a 1 GB card and don't have one to check by putting in your camera, look in your owner's manual.
If you lost your manual, you can do some estimates and some calculations. A 5 MP camera will make files about 3-3.5 MB in size for an "average" full size, maximum resolution picture. Sometimes more and sometimes less. The theoretical MAXIMUM would be 5 MB, right?
One billion divided by 5 million = 200 pictures.
If the file size if more like 3.5 MP, though:
One billion divided by 3.5 million = 285 pictures.
Do the math to draw your own conclusions about lesser file sizes.
If you shoot a mid-size photo with "normal" resolution, you might even be able to get about a thousand on the card. Check your manual for details.

It depends on the following factors:
1. Image size
Your camera will probably be abe to store images of different sizes. At least two. May be more. Ths s the primary factor that determines file size. The larger the size the bigger the size of the file stored on your card.
2. Image quality
Cameras usually provide 2, 3 ot 4 picture qualities. The highest quality is usually "RAW". The lower the quality, the more number of pictures you can store.
So my Canon 300D (6.3 megapix) stores abut 280 pictures in the largest size with the highest resolution (2048 x 3096). However, not as RAW image.
I would suggest you go for a large card if you are a shutter happy person. Even look at the 2GB or 4GB options but do nt go fr a microdrive.

Depends on the resolution of the pics. Hi-res uses more space than low-res. Consult the documentation that came with your camera or card.

1GB will hold several hundred pictures.
Pictures range from around 300KB to 5MB. It depends on the make and model. But even at 5MB (ludicrously big), a 1GB card will hold 200 shots.

It really depends on the megapixel of your camera, and also the sensor size. Normally memory cards come with some sort of chart when you buy them.
