Pick a variety of fruit you like, chop it up and mix it in a container. Refrigerate it when you're done. Some people add things to the mix like sugar or balsamic vinaigrette. I don't like adding anything to mine as all the fruit juice combine to make a sort of sauce on there own. My personal favorite is strawberries and sectioned oranges (peeled and cut between membranes so only the "meat" is present.)

I make a fresh fruit salad with any fruits that are currently in season or that I can find easily at the grocery store.

I cut up all the fruit into bite size pieces, add some walnuts, pecans or almonds or maybe some granola or some raisins.

To hold it all together I'll mix in some plain yogurt or whatever flavor yogurt I like, or mayonaise or sour cream or honey.

Sometimes I don't add anything to hold it together, just scoop the fruit into small bowls for serving.

First decide what kind of fruit you are going to put into the salad. Always use the freshest fruit you can find. Make sure that the fruit is cleaned before using. Dice, cut, slice, whatever you prefer. Mix all the fruit together in a bowl. To really kick up the fruit, try adding a can of 7 Up or ginger ale to the fruit. Really gives the fruit a little Pizzaz!!. Have fun.

The best advice I have for you is to use the freshest fruit you can find and stick with your favourites. I love apples, pears, orange segments (okay to use canned clementines -- this makes it easier), pineapple, grapes, etc. Best to sprinkle a little lemon or lime juice over the whole thing so that the fruit stays fresh.

California Fruit Salad:

Notes: Up to 6 hours ahead, cut all the fruit except avocados; cover and chill. Up to 15 minutes before serving, slice avocados and coat with fruit juices.

3 tablespoons pine nuts or slivered almonds
4 oranges (1/2 lb. each)
2 ruby or pink grapefruit (3/4 lb. each)
2 firm-ripe avocados (1 lb. total)
Large butter, green-, or red-leaf lettuce leaves, rinsed and crisped
1 firm-ripe papaya (1 lb.), peeled, seeded, and sliced
2 cups red or black grapes, rinsed
Poppy seed dressing
Salt and pepper

1. In a 6- to 8-inch frying pan over medium heat, stir or shake nuts until golden, 3 to 5 minutes. Pour from pan and let cool.

2. Cut peel and white membrane from oranges and grapefruit. Over a bowl, cut between membranes to release fruit segments; put in bowl.

3. Peel, pit, and slice the avocados; coat slices with some of the citrus juice from the bowl.

4. Line a large platter with lettuce leaves. Arrange oranges, grapefruit, avocados, papaya, and grapes on leaves. Sprinkle with nuts. Moisten with a little of the poppy seed dressing, then spoon portions of salad onto plates and add more dressing and salt and pepper to taste.

Yield: Makes 8 to 10 servings

Any fresh berries in season, pears, peaches, bananas. Don't use pineapple or citrus or it will curdle the whipped cream. Then I whip my own cream and you do not need sugar because the fruit will make it sweet enough. Mix together just before serving. Keep refrigerated.

Cut up lots of fresh fruit, combine them together and add a little fresh fruit juice to make it tastier (orange, pineapple, etc.)
