My dog has been in kennels for 6 weeks, due to a delayed housing chain, and him not being able to come with us. I've only visited twice, because I found it too distressing, and I felt it was unfair on him too. I'm getting him out next weekend, and I just wanted to know whether he's actually even likely to remember who I am? Or will he have a new knowledge of me as someone that came to walk him whilst he was in kennels? When I've arrived at kennels, he seems more excited to see me than the other dogs, but I'm still not convinced that he actually associates me with the person who has brought him up from six weeks old :(

He'll be major league happy to see you, I had a dog from pup. As I am in the merchant navy and used to go away for 6 -7 months, my parents looked after my dog whilst I was gone. Not kennels I know, but she used to got crazy when I walk through the front door.
Take him for a long walk, take him home & give him some food he really enjoys and all will be forgiven. Dogs are very loyal to their owners.

My 7 year old neo mastiff remembered my nephew, who initially had him for his first year. Three years went by, and when he came home on leave, the dog went insane, peed all over the place and would not stop rubbing, licking, kisses, etc.. So, yes-they do remember. And now he visits about 2 or 3 times a month and the dog does the same thing. You can't forget love I guess. Don't worry-keep visiting and everything will be ok. Good Luck!!!!!

Dogs have a great sense of smell and if you have had it a long time before he went in the kennels the chances are that it will recognised you as soon as you go fetch it

I think six weeks is a very long time to leave your baby. But... how long did you have him before you left him? My sister adopted a pup and only had her for a few days and had to leave her with me for three weeks and she did not remember her. but after a day or two warmed up to her again. I'm sure that would be the case if the dog has forgotten you. But it's possible it never forgets, because we go months without seeing my family, and my puppies are always overly excited when we visit them in California. so good luck...

It relies upon on the fragrance and challenge. searching dogs instinctively understand the smell of sport. in the experience that they are experienced to chase one particular type of sport (racoons, or foxes, as an celebration) they're going to practically truthfully shop in ideas the fragrance all their lives and truthfully be able to song it in the experience that they arrive throughout the time of it. human being scents of someone or dogs are a lot diverse. A puppy taken from it really is mom or clutter received't shop in ideas both one contained in the destiny- it really isn't any longer component of their nature to shop in ideas those relationships, and they are very youthful at the same time as they go away abode. on the different hand, a dogs that grew up with one particular dogs, and performed with it continually for years, and then changed into taken away for decades, would possibly shop in ideas the dogs both from fragrance and imaginative and prescient in the experience that they said one yet another contained in the destiny. similar with a dogs that had spent an important era of time with one proprietor and changed into then separated. there have been suggested situations of dogs being reunited with previous proprietors and obviously remembering them. the precise era of time a dogs can shop in ideas one fragrance, or how lengthy it takes to ingrain that fragrance of their memory first of all, can not be conventional. yet we do understand from a lot of experience that it takes a lengthy time period to shop in ideas the fragrance, so awaiting them to shop in ideas a clutter mate or make sure only isn't achievable.

It probably depends on the dog. I put my spaniel in a kennel for a week & he didn't even seem glad to see me when I picked him up.
A friend had a wiener dog that hadn't seen me in a year & went nuts as soon as he saw me.

Dogs remember you for years. He just doesn't understand why you are coming to visit and not taking him with you. When you get him around the normal stuff he will act different.

Don't distress yourself, he will remember you without doubt. Just think of the fun you will both have when he comes home this weekend. It sounds to me that he is very lucky having you many dogs are not that fortunate. Enjoy.

People have had to leave their pets in quarantine for six months, of course your dog will know you and I'm sure he will be back to his old routine within a few minutes of being back with you. I had to leave my dog for a month when I went on holiday, she pee'd herself when she saw us all again she was so excited.

Don't worry, it takes them 2 years of not seeing you for them to forget. Its best not to visit too often if they're in for a long stay, you've done the right thing.
