I'm volunteering for two weeks in an ecology conservation proyect, then two weeks of a tour through different places.
What's the weather like in May? I'm from Miami, is the heat the same?
Any important sites I shouldn't miss. How much money do I need to spend there.
Is it safe? How's the food?
I'm excited

The country comprises 76 provinces. Its shape and geography divide into four natural regions : the mountains and forests of the North; the vast rice fields of the Central Plains; the semi-arid farm lands of the Northeast plateau; and the tropical islands and long coastline of the peninsula South. Bangkok is the capital city.

As you can see, there's something for everyone, depending on your interests. Currency exchange rate at 1US$=38 Bahts makes it very affordable to travel and live here. Weather's great throughout the year, with more rain during months of October till December.

From Miami? Hop on one of the many local tours to cover many places of interests in a short time. Great experience for big city folks - elephant/jungle trekking, river rafting. Visit the ancient sites for a change - Sukhothai, Ayudhya. Many historical monuments a-la Angkor Wat style & era. Wide selection of food, with the diverse ethic groups living here. Shopping is great, especially the local handicrafts - something to bring home and for friends. The bargaining part is quite an experience ;-)

Have fun, enjoy and visit www.tourismthailand.org for more info.

Glad you bare excited - it's a wonderful place.
I don't know Miami weather, but Thailand is HOT in May.
Its also outside of high season, so there will be few other travellers around.
There are thousands of things to do and see - beaches in the south, and mountains in the north.
If you are back-packing, and don't need luxury hotels, then about $15-$20 per day is easily enough for food, guest house and travel.
It's very safe, and everybody is very friendly.
The food is fantastic - some of the best in the world I reckon - some is very hot and spicy, and some is less hot and very tasty.
I would guess that your ecology conversation will be in the north, so see Chiang Mai, Doi Suthep Temple, some hill tribes, the Night Bazaar,
In the south there are many islands worth visiting. Get a Lonely Planet Guide Book, which has lots of info.

During May Thailand will be as hot and humid as Miami. Bring lots of shorts b/c it's hot over there. If you have time you should purchase a book called Frommer in Thailand. Give you really good info about Thailand. THere are many temples, palace to visit. You'll be amazed. If yo do decide to visit those place do bring close toe shoe and pants. Those place have clothes restriction. Every $1 U.S. equal 40 blah. Food is entertainment is very reasonable..... You probably spend around $5 or less per meal. Do bring some extra money for gifts. Everything is very nice and cheap in Thailand. Have a wonderful time.

TK and David gave you very good information already. I just want to add on a bit. Bring only light clothing. In some place like temple or the Grand Palace you need to wear appropriate dress. Short is not allow to wear over there. Sometime it hot and also rain during May. Best is to bring your raincoat or umbrella along. Miami is just warm similarly to Thailand. But it is less humidity at your place compared to this country. I think you will enjoy your 4 weeks there. Last but not least, please do not touch any Thai's head or using your foot pointing thing. That's will be a culture's shock. Welcome to Thailand and have a good stay.

First of all, Thailand is perfectly safe...well, it depends on where you go. But, the food there tastes great...assuming that you are asian or that you like "asian type" food. The weather is warm-hot and very very humid. There are places who will charge 3x the original price for things such as souviniers because they know that you are a tourist and thus ignorant. My advice is to check out other places before you decide to buy an item. Good luck and have fun!
