A balanced diet is a diet high in fruits and veggies and whole grains.

When it comes to veggies, try to get as many color veggies in as possible......green, white, orange, red, etc

When it comes to fruit, concentrate on the fruits highest in nutrients......all fruits are great, but some are really superfruits.
Things like blueberries, oranges, apples, pineapples, etc....get many colors of this too.

When it comes to whole grains, make sure it IS whole grains. When you read the label on bread, make sure it says "whole" in either the first or second ingredient. Never buy bread, buns, or pasta that says "enriched." Always buy whole grains. Enriched means it took out all the healthy nutrients and left you with something that tastes good but no nutrient value.

When it comes to red meat, try to really limit how much you eat of that. No more than 2 servings per week.

When it comes to chicken or turkey, make sure you know how it was prepared. Never eat fried. Baked or grilled is best

Try to also include Salmon in your diet at least 2 times per week. It's is the #1 food that is called a superfood. It makes you healthy by healing your heart, reducing cholesterol, and it makes your hair and skin glow with beauty. It truely is a superfood. I buy cans of salmon just like people buy cans of tuna. Make sure it's always Salmon packed in water (never buy packed in oil) and always make sure it's Wild Alaskan Salmon. Farm raised salmon can have contaminates like mercury that could be harmful. I just mix it with a low cal may and pickles or onions and eat it on a whole grain bread or crackers. Your heart will love you for this food alone!

Variety is key. Stop going through drive-thrus. 99 percent of things you can buy through a drive-thru is NOT healthy. They even did a recent study which showed the Mcdonald's salad was actually higher in fat that a BigMac, so you can't win even with a salad there, so just stay away from fast food places altogether.

Start preparing foods from scratch. If you can't cook, learn. Your life literally depends on it. I taught myself to cook and you can too. I have a friend who teaches nutrition who has a saying "That the longer you spend preparing food in the kitchen is the longer you will spend on this earth."

Start preparing your foods using whole foods and you'll feel better and you'll look better and you'll definitely be more healthy.
Good Luck to you!

Well, I'm no nutritionist, and I think you could get a lot of information from more credible sources than this, but in my opinion, a balanced diet contains plenty of fruits and veggies (at least five servings a day), lots of fiber, some calcium and protein, and complex carbohydrates. It contains little fat, sweets, salt, etc.

A balanced diet must contain carbohydrate, protein, fat, vitamins, mineral salts and fibre. It must contain these things in the correct proportions.
