Your question reminded me of a joke I received in my email the other day.
The email told of a politician who died and found himself at the Pearly Gates. St. Peter told the politician that before he would be allowed to spend eternity in either heaven or hell, he was required to make a brief visit, first to hell, and then to heaven, before voting as to which he preferred. The politician quickly responded that his vote was for heaven. He didn't need to make visits because he already knew he preferred heaven.
St. Peter said he was sorry, but orders from above made the visits and voting mandatory. So onto the elevator and down to hell they went. When the doors to hell opened, the politician was pleasantly surprised. The devil and many other people, some of them old political colleagues, were on a beautiful golf course enjoying themselves. The politician questioned the devil about that, and he responded that you can't believe everything you read when on earth.
Next stop, heaven. When the doors opened, the politician noticed that many people were mingling in a peaceful and tranquil environment seemingly very happy. At a distance, some angels were tidying their wing feathers, straightening their halos, and telling stories about how they had helped various earthlings to become better people, etc.
The politician found this interesting, but pretty boring compared to the activities he had seen in hell. So, he told St. Peter that based on his observations, he preferred hell to heaven and was voting accordingly.
St. Peter asked him if he was sure, because his decision would be final (orders from above you know). The politician said he was sure. So, on to the elevator, and down to hell they went.
The doors to hell opened and he stepped in to find the environment very different from the one he witnessed during his earlier visit. He asked the devil what had happened, explaining that hell now looked more like the descriptions he had read while he was still on earth.
The devil put his arm around him and smiled as he explained that earlier they had been doing a little campaining, but that now he had voted.

Who gets to be "God" and who gets to be "Devil" is all a matter of who has the mot power. What could the Devil plan for his enemies worse that being burned ternally and unable to die? I don't really see a qualitative difference between the two except in terms of supposed power. I'm quite sure the Devil would sacrifice his only son.

OK, what if you just sealed your fate by making that statement. I would rather believe in God and know that He is good. If I am wrong, I won't know any difference anyway when I'm dead. But if I had the chance to make a choice, and did nothing, that would be pretty stupid on my part. Do not try God's patience. If you doubt that last statement, just ask Him to damn something and see how quickly your prayer is answered.

Well, if Satan was really all good, surely he'd understand that people were tricked, and just judge them on how they lived their lives? But then, the Christian god's apparently too egotistical for that scheme to work out, so who knows?
