Quite correct, what are you fishing for? Reds, trout, blackdrum, flounder? Best bet with crab is, get one about 3 to 4 inches across. Cut him in half, front to back. insert your hook through one of the leg joints into the body try to bury sa much of the hook as you can in the body. I prefer #2 circle hooks. Right before you pitch the critter in the drink, peel off it`s back shell. You`ll get a lot of small peckers and crabs nawing on it, but I believe this attracts the attention of larger prey.

The most common way to fish with crab is the hook the hook through the crab. But this method does sometimes damage the crab if the hook is placed incorrect and then the crab needs to be hold together by elastic.

Rather make use of the following method it works very well, looks natural and not damage to the crab.
Dry the shell {top} of the crab, now put some super glue on top of the shell. Place the hook facing up on top of the shell. The super glue will keep the hook in place. Wait till the glue is dry and then the serious fishing can start. Takes +- 2 to 3 minutes for the glue to dry.

I've never used live crabs for bait. If you figure that out without losing a finger please post results here! You didn't mention the fish targeted but on the Texas Gulf Coast we use small crabs (palm of your hand size) as bait for 'red fish' (Red Drum). Bigger crabs for bigger fish like 'Bull Reds' but you have to tag those and only one per trip. I suggest releasing the Bulls. I personally prefer to remove the outer shell and then break the crab in half down the middle so that each piece has legs on it. Place your hook in a hard spot or the fish will run off with your crab. I hate it when that happens. Let the bait go to the bottom. Good luck and be careful around water. Fish on!

look at the bottom of the crab at the back you'll see a V shaped flap (females carry their eggs under it ) the shell is softer here gently push the hook in at the point of the V so it dose not exit ,if done right the crab will live through it

good luck
