I am a 5th grade teacher. These are the novels that we read throughout the year: From the Mixed Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler, A Family Apart, Red Dog, Bridge to Terabithia, and Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH. My students also enjoy all the Harry Potter Books, Loser, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory or Glass Elevator, Hatching Magic,How To Eat Fried Worms (also on movie now), Ferrits in the Bedroom Lizards in the Fridge, The Biggest Klutz in 5th Grade, Where The Red Fern Grows....Hope this list helps....these are some of my kids favorites!

I would recommend The Tale of Despareaux. It's a very complicated book, and might be challenging for 5th graders, but it's definitely entertaining. The Mixed-up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler is also a great book.

That really depends on their reading level, how well they are able to read and comprehend. Take the child to the library and allow them to choose books of their interest to read. You can ask the librarian for assistance and usually they are very helpful. There are many authors who write a series of books regarding the same topic and they are all different with the same characters. Or you could ask your child's teacher what level they are at. I know at my children's school the teachers keep track of the children's reading levels and they all have weekly goals to maintain. Hope this was helpful

If it is a girl, "The Baby-Sitters Club" and "Sweet Valley High" series books were some of my favorite when I was younger....also Nancy Drew and R.L. Stine, they are more mystery like books, and could be for male or female.....Look on Ebay for great deals on them....Good Luck!
